Somali, AU Forces Conduct Joint Operation Against Al-Shabaab in Lower Shabelle

Somali National Army forces, in collaboration with troops from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), have launched a new security operation targeting al-Shabaab militants

Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – Somali National Army forces, in collaboration with troops from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), have launched a new security operation targeting al-Shabaab militants in areas surrounding Awdheegle town in the Lower Shabelle region of the South West State.

According to multiple security sources, the operation aimed to dismantle al-Shabaab hideouts and secure vital supply routes that connect Awdheegle to neighboring districts.

The offensive follows recent advances by Somali and ATMIS forces—particularly Ugandan contingents—who successfully captured several key villages previously under al-Shabaab control in the region.

During the operation, joint forces conducted extensive searches along main roads to clear potential improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by the militants.

Security personnel also inspected vehicles and travelers to prevent the movement of weapons and explosives between the newly liberated areas.

Military officials noted that the Lower Shabelle region remains a strategic area for both the Somali government and al-Shabaab, given its agricultural productivity and proximity to Mogadishu. Securing this region is considered vital to maintaining the stability of the capital and surrounding areas.

Senior officials from the Somali National Army, the Ministry of Defense, and the ATMIS mission visited Awdheegle to assess progress and strengthen coordination in ongoing counterterrorism operations.

The leadership discussed strategies to enhance local security, stabilize liberated territories, and support community recovery initiatives.

The Federal Government of Somalia continues its nationwide offensive against al-Shabaab, with operations also ongoing in the Galmudug, Hirshabelle, and Jubaland states.

Officials have reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating the group and restoring lasting peace and stability across the country.
