Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – The Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) strongly condemns the unlawful detention of Faysal Omar, a journalist working with Reuters News Agency, who was apprehended by police while carrying out his professional duties.
According to a statement released by SJS, Faysal was covering events in Mogadishu when a group of police officers forcibly removed him from the scene and took him to the Wadajir District Police Station.
SJS calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Faysal Omar and demands an end to the ongoing harassment, arbitrary detentions, and obstruction of journalists in Mogadishu.
“Reporting on public protests is a constitutional right,” the statement emphasized. “The press must be allowed to cover peaceful demonstrations without fear of reprisal.”
SJS urges all journalists to continue performing their duties courageously, to support one another, and to remain vigilant and informed in the face of increasing challenges.
