Security challenges in Mogadishu

|

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Senior officials from Somalia’s security agencies are reported to have clashed following a dispute over the division of money paid to authorize the release of prohibited shipments that arrived at the Port of Mogadishu. Emerging reports indicate that the shipment in question contained drugs.

Other sources say the dispute was also linked to payments made for the release of weapons and toxic substances believed to have been destined for armed groups fighting in the country. These shipments were reportedly transported from Yemen and Pakistan.

This incident highlights a serious and dangerous situation within the security institutions, particularly the Police and the Intelligence Agency, which are said to be at odds over bribes paid to allow the release of shipments that pose a grave threat to national security and the lives of Somali civilians.

The people of Mogadishu, who have long endured insecurity and lack of development, continue to call for peace and prosperity. Much of the blame is being placed on officials accused of profiting from the bloodshed and the future of the Somali people.

If the country’s top leaders continue to sign destructive agreements, and if the government and parliament fail to hold those responsible accountable, then it becomes unsurprising that security officers would engage in the trafficking of weapons and toxic substances—something that was, under such circumstances, to be expected.
