Renewed Clashes Between Tribal Militias Escalate in Luuq District

|

Luuq (KAAB TV) – Tensions flared once again today in the Luuq district of Somalia’s Gedo region, as a violent clash erupted between two rival tribal militias. Local sources report that the fighting began in the outskirts of the district and has been ongoing for several hours, with heavy gunfire heard throughout the area.

Witnesses say both sides were heavily armed, using a variety of weapons, leading to multiple casualties and injuries. The conflict is part of a series of ongoing skirmishes in Luuq that have destabilized the area and disrupted daily life.

The latest outbreak of violence is rooted in longstanding disputes over local governance and retaliatory attacks stemming from past killings. Despite previous mediation efforts led by the Jubbaland administration—including Vice President Mohamud Sayid Adan—the situation remains unresolved.

Although an earlier peace agreement was reached under the auspices of Jubbaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Madobe), it failed to hold, and hostilities have resumed.

Community leaders, including traditional elders and intellectuals, have repeatedly called for an end to the bloodshed, warning of further destruction and loss of life. However, their appeals have so far gone unheeded as the conflict intensifies.

The worsening crisis has raised alarm among residents, who are urging the warring factions and regional authorities to take immediate action to restore peace and prevent further violence in Luuq district.
