Puntland Arrests 18 Police Officers Over Security Incident in Garowe

GAROWE (Kaab TV) – Puntland authorities announced on Monday the arrest of 18 officers from the Puntland Police Support Unit, known as Birmadka, over their alleged involvement in unrest and security disturbances that took place in Garowe on June 7.

In a press statement, the Puntland Police Command apologized to the public for the incident, describing it as a disorderly act that disrupted life in the capital city after a group of officers unlawfully blocked roads and interfered with public security and order.

The police statement stressed that the actions of the officers did not represent the discipline, professionalism, or responsibilities of the Puntland Police Force. Authorities instead described the incident as an organized act allegedly influenced by individuals pursuing personal interests aimed at damaging the reputation of the security forces and undermining the image of the Puntland administration.

Puntland police officials confirmed that the detained officers are currently under formal investigation and will be brought before the Military Court for further legal proceedings.

The Police Command also expressed hope that the Birmadka forces would recover from the reputational damage caused by the incident and restore public confidence in the unit.

Puntland authorities reiterated that maintaining security and public order remains a constitutional responsibility and warned that any actions threatening the stability of the region would not be tolerated.

The arrests come amid ongoing concerns over internal security tensions and discipline within parts of Puntland’s security forces following recent incidents in Garowe.
