HARGEISA (KAAB TV) – The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi Irro, departed today on a three-day official working visit to Djibouti.
According to a statement from the Presidential Office, President Irro is accompanied by members of his Cabinet and other senior government officials.
“The two Presidents will discuss matters of mutual interest between the Republic of Somaliland and the Republic of Djibouti,” the statement read briefly.
This visit comes amid strained relations between the two neighboring countries. Tensions have escalated in recent years, particularly following Djibouti’s opposition to the maritime agreement signed between Somaliland and Ethiopia, which Djibouti perceived as an economic threat. The disagreement even led to a diplomatic standoff.
Under the previous administration of President Muse Bihi, Somaliland accused Djibouti of violating the principles of good neighborliness. The Bihi government alleged that Djibouti had hosted opposition figures from the Awdal State movement and the SSC-Khatumo administration. Djibouti, in turn, denied the accusations and defended its actions.
President Irro’s administration has emphasized its intention to rebuild diplomatic relations with Djibouti. This visit is expected to lay the groundwork for renewed cooperation and potential agreements that could help restore bilateral trust.
Since taking office, President Irro has made two official visits to the United Arab Emirates. This trip to Djibouti marks his third international engagement as head of state.
