MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia has emphasized the significant implications of Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam (GERD) project on the broader Horn of Africa region, with particular concern for the Nile Basin countries, especially Egypt and Sudan.

In an exclusive interview with Al-Arabiya Television, President Mohamud underscored the critical need for dialogue, mutual understanding, and long-term cooperation among all parties involved in order to avoid escalating tensions and to foster a solution that benefits the entire region.

“The issue of the Nile River is not only a bilateral matter between Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia; it is a regional concern that requires thoughtful, inclusive diplomacy,” said Mohamud.

He stressed that any disruption of water flow or unilateral actions regarding the dam could have lasting consequences for regional stability.

Addressing Somalia’s own strategic partnerships, President Mohamud affirmed that the evolving relationship between Somalia and Ethiopia will not undermine or jeopardize Somalia’s strong and historic ties with Egypt.

He praised Egypt for its consistent support to Somalia, particularly in the areas of military training, logistical assistance, and security capacity building.

According to the president, this enduring cooperation highlights Egypt’s commitment to peace and stability in Somalia and reflects the deep-rooted bond between the two nations.

The president also took the opportunity to dispel rising speculation about a potential military conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea, describing such reports as unfounded and misleading.

“There are currently no credible indications or movements suggesting an imminent war between Ethiopia and Eritrea,” he stated, calling for restraint in the spread of unverified information that could inflame regional tensions.

Turning to Somalia’s broader foreign relations, President Mohamud reaffirmed the long-standing historical relationship between Somalia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He noted that ties between the two nations span centuries and continue to grow stronger.

According to the president, Somalia and Saudi Arabia are now engaged in a renewed phase of cooperation focused on economic development, regional security, and infrastructure advancement.

President Mohamud concluded by calling on all regional actors to prioritize peace, stability, and collaborative development efforts, emphasizing that a stable Horn of Africa is vital not only for the countries directly involved but also for broader global security and economic interests.
