President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Leads High-Level Talks in New York on Sustaining Support for Somalia’s Security Transition

NEW YORK (KAAB TV) – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud leads a pivotal meeting in New York to secure support for Somalia’s security transition.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, brought together key international stakeholders to assess the urgent financial and logistical needs required to sustain Somalia’s ongoing security transition and ensure long-term peace and stability.

The central aim of the discussion was to mobilize financial support for ATMIS, a mission mandated to support Somalia in its efforts to degrade the terrorist group Al-Shabaab and facilitate the gradual transfer of security responsibilities to the Somali National Army (SNA).

The meeting also focused on broader goals such as the restructuring and professionalization of Somalia’s national security forces, strengthening institutional independence, and supporting political stability during this crucial period.

Participants in the meeting included senior representatives from the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the United States, the United Kingdom, and other bilateral and multilateral donors.

All attendees reaffirmed the urgent need for sustained financial and logistical support to ensure that ATMIS can fulfill its mandate effectively, especially as Somalia approaches key benchmarks in the transition plan.

These include a phased drawdown of ATMIS forces and a concurrent increase in the operational capacity of Somali-led security institutions.

President Mohamud presented a clear vision and roadmap for the next phase of the security transition, highlighting the government’s commitment to building a capable, accountable, and self-reliant national army.

He emphasized that without consistent and predictable funding, both the mission and Somalia’s broader security objectives would be at risk.

“The security of Somalia is not only vital for the stability of the Horn of Africa, but also for global peace and the fight against terrorism,” said President Mohamud. “Our government is making significant progress in rebuilding national security institutions, but we cannot do it alone.

We deeply value the partnership of our international friends and urge them to maintain their critical support during this transitional period.”

The President also extended his gratitude to international partners for their longstanding contributions and urged them to remain committed to Somalia’s path toward sovereignty, security, and sustainable development.

The meeting concluded with consensus on the need for urgent resource mobilization, the alignment of donor support with Somalia’s national priorities, and the strengthening of coordination between the Federal Government and international stakeholders.
