MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has departed for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he is scheduled to attend the 2nd African Climate Conference, set to take place from September 8th to 10th, 2025.
During his visit, President Hassan Sheikh will hold a high-level bilateral meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
The two leaders are expected to discuss a range of regional and environmental issues, with a focus on strengthening cooperation in climate resilience, economic development, and regional security.
In addition to the bilateral talks, President Hassan Sheikh will participate in various sessions of the African Climate Conference, where he is slated to deliver a keynote address.
His speech will highlight Somalia’s pressing environmental challenges, including prolonged droughts, flooding, deforestation, and the broader impact of climate change on food security and displacement within the Horn of Africa.
The summit brings together heads of state, climate experts, development partners, and civil society actors to formulate a united African stance ahead of upcoming global climate negotiations.
The president is expected to engage with several other African leaders to advocate for increased climate financing and support for vulnerable nations like Somalia.
Notably, President Hassan Sheikh’s visit also coincides with Ethiopia’s plans to showcase its controversial Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Nile River.
Sources indicate that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has invited the Somali president to attend the ceremonial opening of the dam, a project that has sparked diplomatic tensions between Ethiopia and Egypt.
Egypt remains staunchly opposed to the dam, citing concerns over its impact on downstream water flow and national security.
The Somali president’s participation in such a symbolic event could carry broader geopolitical implications, as regional powers closely monitor the alignment of interests within the Horn of Africa.
President Hassan Sheikh is expected to return to Mogadishu following the conclusion of the conference.
