Addis Ababa (KAAB TV) – On Tuesday, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud participated in a high-level regional summit held in Guba, Ethiopia, focused on enhancing security cooperation and securing sustainable financing for African Union peacekeeping operations, particularly the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), formerly known as AMISOM.
The five-party summit brought together prominent regional leaders, including Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Kenyan President William Ruto, and the Chairperson of the African Union, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf. The meeting was convened to strengthen multilateral collaboration on regional security challenges and to reaffirm collective efforts in combating terrorism and promoting stability across the Horn of Africa.
During the summit, President Mohamud underscored the critical importance of continued support for the Somali National Armed Forces and the ATMIS mission. He praised the tangible progress made in the fight against the terrorist group Al-Shabaab, but also highlighted the ongoing need for coordinated regional and international support to sustain these gains.
“The commitment and sacrifice of our armed forces have brought us significant victories,” said President Mohamud. “However, the threat of terrorism remains, and we must continue working together—regionally and globally—to ensure long-term peace and security in Somalia and the wider region.”
The Somali president reaffirmed his government’s steadfast commitment to eradicating terrorism and strengthening national and regional security infrastructures. He called for increased investment in joint security mechanisms and greater collaboration between African nations and their international partners to confront shared threats.
The summit concluded with a joint commitment from attending leaders to enhance regional cooperation, mobilize resources for peacekeeping operations, and support sustainable peace-building initiatives across East Africa.
