MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Residents of Dayniile district have, for three consecutive days, been clashing with land-grabbing groups reportedly backed by Somali police forces and business figures alleged to have been sold land by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in the Warlaliska neighborhood.

Violent confrontations erupted between local residents—mostly women and children—and heavily armed police units, including special forces led by an officer identified as Aadan Dheere, who is said to be related to the president’s family through marriage.

The fighting began on Thursday, April 16, when angry residents, supported by local militias, confronted the land-grabbing groups attempting to seize property in the area. The clashes continued into the evening.

Local sources and hospitals reported that at least six people were killed during Thursday’s violence.

Further sporadic clashes occurred on Saturday and Sunday after armed police raided the Warlaliska neighborhood, arresting some residents and entering private homes.

Traditional elders who spoke to Kaab TV said several people were injured, including a Murusade clan elder, Nabadoon Omar Maanafaato, who sustained head and arm injuries.

At least one person was reportedly killed on Saturday during a two-hour confrontation between police units accompanying the land-grabbing operation and residents defending their homes.

As of Monday night, the situation is reported to be calm, although armed police remain deployed in the affected neighborhoods.

A nighttime curfew has been imposed in Warlaliska, with residents saying their movement is severely restricted.

With less than a month remaining in his term, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is accused of accelerating land seizures in Mogadishu, disproportionately affecting vulnerable civilian populations.

Agencies monitoring displacement report that more than 140,000 families were displaced from their homes in 2025, many by government forces.

Sources who spoke to Kaab TV allege that public lands from which residents were evicted have been resold, with proceeds reportedly going directly to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud rather than into the state treasury.

Residents also report a sharp increase in the seizure of privately owned land, often carried out by groups allegedly linked to the government.

Protests against land grabbing and forced evictions are frequent in Mogadishu. However, media coverage remains limited, as journalists and civil society members who speak out about these abuses have repeatedly faced arrests and intimidation.

In an audio recording circulated by local media, Sadiyo said she had gone without food for four out of the seven days she has been detained.

“I’m speaking to you from the bathroom. I have been detained for seven days; for four days I have not eaten anything,” she said.

Sadiyo Bajaaj, a well-known young activist in Mogadishu who previously worked as a bajaj (three-wheeler) driver, was forcibly taken from the Taleex neighborhood by armed officers believed to be from Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) on Sunday, April 12.

Days later, she was transferred to Mogadishu Central Prison without any formal charges being filed. However, a court has reportedly ordered her detention for 90 days, according to information obtained by Kaab TV.

Prior to her arrest, Sadiyo had posted a video on social media stating that “police officers were searching for her.”

She also expressed fears that she could be subjected to sexual violence, claiming there were intentions to punish her through such abuse.

Federal government security agencies have so far remained silent on the reasons behind her arrest.

Sadiyo has been a vocal critic of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his administration.

In several videos posted on her Facebook and TikTok platforms, she spoke out against corruption, favoritism, and abuse of power, accusing President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the Governor of Banadir Region of nepotism, alleging that they employed their relatives while Somali youth remain unemployed.

About a month before this detention, Sacdiyo was arrested in Mogadishu after she and other bajaj drivers staged a protest against rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of living, calling on the Banadir regional administration to take action.

Mogadishu’s prison system does not provide food for detainees, forcing prisoners to rely on financial support from their families to survive—something many cannot afford.

Women detainees face particularly harsh conditions, with reported cases of rape and sexual abuse inside prisons. Such incidents often go unreported due to fear and stigma.

Somalia remains a place where individuals are targeted for expressing their views, particularly those from marginalized and unarmed communities.

MOGADISHU – The Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) calls on Somaliland’s Sanaag Regional Prosecutor to drop the unfounded charges against local journalist Mohamed Saleban Ahmed for reporting on the severity of the drought in the Sool and Sanaag regions. SJS also urges authorities to allow all journalists unrestricted access to report on the climate crisis without interference or limitations on their work.

On 4 March 2026, police in Erigabo arrested local journalist Mohamed Saleban Ahmed, known as Suute, following the publication of a news report on 3 February that discussed drought conditions in the Sool and Sanaag regions. Suute told SJS that he was released without charge after spending two days in police custody.

On 15 March, the Sanaag Regional Prosecutor of Somaliland, based in Erigabo, issued a charge sheet against the journalist, accusing him of “spreading false information.” On 18 March, the Erigabo District Court summoned the journalist to appear for a hearing in the case brought by the regional prosecutor. According to the charge sheet, which SJS had seen, the Somaliland government is listed as the “victim.”

The journalist’s report, which SJS reviewed, included interviews with rural communities who said they had not received aid despite being severely affected by the ongoing drought.

Suute told SJS that the Deputy Governor of the Sanaag region, Salah Yusuf Diriye, was pushing the case, alleging that local authorities were unhappy with the report and were attempting to silence public complaints about lack of aid. Deputy Governor Diriye was not reachable for comment upon publication of this report.

A local lawyer representing the journalist told SJS that the case has been heard twice, but no verdict has yet been issued.

In July last year, Somaliland declared a national emergency as drought affected four regions, including Sanaag, whose capital is Erigabo. President Abdirahman Abdillahi Irro made an urgent appeal to international donors and Somalilanders at home and abroad to support relief efforts aimed at saving lives and livelihoods.

According to an August 2025 report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, more than 650,000 people were directly affected in Somaliland alone. Aid groups’ reports indicate that over 80% of rural households have been impacted by water shortages and agricultural losses in recent years.

Suute told SJS that he and other reporters visited numerous rural towns, witnessing the severe conditions firsthand, which he documented in his reporting.

SJS calls on the Somaliland authorities, particularly the Erigabo prosecutor, to stop targeting journalist Suute for reporting on and advocating for drought-affected communities. Authorities must respect journalists’ right to report on drought and climate-induced crises and ensure unhindered access to information to help save lives.

“The prosecution of journalist Mohamed Saleebaan Ahmed, known as Suute, for reporting on the devastating drought in Sool and Sanaag regions is both unjustified and deeply concerning. Journalists must not be punished for giving voice to voiceless communities in crisis,” said SJS Secretary General, Abdalle Mumin.

“We call on the Sanaag Regional Prosecutor to immediately drop these unfounded charges and urge Somaliland authorities to guarantee all journalists the freedom to report on climate-induced crises without fear, interference, or restriction,” Mr. Mumin adds.

BAYDHABO (Kaab TV) — Security officers from Southwest State of Somalia announced today that they oppose what they described as a Federal Government offensive on Baidoa last month.

Two officers from the Southwest regional forces, said to be close to President Abdiaziz Laftagareen, stated that they reject the takeover of Baidoa by troops they claim were transported by aircraft.

They also voiced opposition to the planned, disputed elections expected to take place in Baidoa.

Da’uud Mohamed Abdirahman (Da’uud Jiroon), a spokesperson for the forces, said they had exercised patience for some time but that their calls for peace had not been understood.

“Baidoa is a place that has already witnessed conflict. We wanted to avoid adding further suffering to an already affected population,” Da’uud said.

“There is no district in Somalia that has invaded another, nor a region that has taken over another,” he added, describing the operation by federal forces, supported by allied clan militias, as a direct invasion.

He warned against holding elections in the city.

“No elections will take place like this. We will conduct the election ourselves, and it will be led by the local community,” he said.

The officers called for troops deployed from Mogadishu to be withdrawn and returned to their original bases.

The commander of the forces, Col. Isaaq Meedeey, also warned against incoming flights to Baidoa.

They declared Baidoa airport closed and cautioned civilian aircraft against landing in the city.

At the end of last month, Southwest State forces withdrew from Baidoa, while President Abdiaziz Laftagareen fled to Kenya.

Federal Government forces subsequently took control of the city, reportedly with support from Turkish drones and allied clan militias from Mogadishu and Buurhakaba.

The latest statements from these officers indicate that tensions in Southwest State remain unresolved, with reconciliation efforts among local communities yet to succeed.

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) — Somalia’s opposition Himilo Qaran party on Tuesday voiced strong concern over the country’s political and constitutional situation following the expiration of the federal parliament’s term.

In a statement, the party said the official end of the House of the People’s mandate on April 14, 2026—stipulated in Article 60 of the Provisional Constitution—marks a critical moment for governance and the rule of law.

“Protecting the term limits of government institutions is a fundamental pillar of constitutional governance and the rule of law,” the statement said, noting that the Federal Parliament’s four-year mandate begins on the day lawmakers are sworn in.

Himilo Qaran warned that any unconstitutional extension of mandates or unilateral political actions could undermine Somalia’s governance framework and destabilize the country. The party specifically cautioned against any unilateral move by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, saying such actions could threaten the constitutional order.

The party urged the president to uphold the constitution and honor political agreements based on inclusive consensus, stressing the importance of timely and widely accepted elections. It also called on all political stakeholders to avoid term extensions and disputed or incomplete electoral processes.

Himilo Qaran appealed to political parties and leaders across Somalia to unite in safeguarding the constitutional system and to reach an inclusive political agreement to prevent conflict and instability.

The statement comes amid rising political tensions following constitutional amendments passed by the federal parliament before its term expired. The amendments extend the mandates of federal institutions, including the presidency, from four to five years—a move the federal government says is necessary to enable a transition to one-person, one-vote elections.

The changes have been rejected by the Puntland and Jubbaland state administrations, as well as several opposition groups, including Himilo Qaran. The party maintains that only the existing Provisional Constitution, which sets four-year terms, holds legal and political legitimacy without a nationwide consensus process.

In a statement, the council noted that Somalia’s Provisional Constitution stipulates that the mandates of federal institutions expired on April 14, 2026. It warned that the absence of a constitutionally compliant electoral process could plunge the country into political uncertainty and instability.

The group directly criticized President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, accusing him of failing to organize timely elections and attempting to postpone them without broad political consensus.
“The president’s term ends on May 15, 2026, and after that date he will not have the legitimacy to remain in office unless an agreed-upon election is held,” the statement said.

The Somali Future Council called on citizens to uphold the constitution and reject any arrangements that could lead to what it described as an illegitimate extension of power or the establishment of an unconstitutional interim administration. It also urged the international community to closely monitor developments in Somalia and support the organization of free, fair, and inclusive elections based on broad political agreement.

The warning comes amid heightened political tensions following constitutional amendments passed by the federal parliament before its term expired. The changes extend the mandates of federal institutions, including the presidency, from four years to five.

NAIROBI (Kaab TV) – A former Nigerian oil minister on trial in London has flatly denied ever soliciting or accepting bribes, insisting that lavish expenditures linked to her time in office were reimbursed by the state oil company.

Diezani Alison-Madueke, 65, told Southwark Crown Court in the UK, on Monday that she had “tried to push back on corruption” in a country she said had been plagued by it since the colonial era.

“I can state categorically that at no point did I ask for, take or receive a bribe of any sort from these persons and did not abuse my office,” she told the court. “I always sought to act impartially.”

Prosecutors allege that several Nigerian businessmen bankrolled extensive spending on her behalf, including more than £2 million at luxury department store Harrods and £4.6 million on refurbishing properties in London and Buckinghamshire.

She is also alleged to have had access to a £2.8 million home in Marylebone and multi-million pound residences overlooking Regent’s Park.

Alison-Madueke told the court that the costs of services provided during her official duties were later repaid by the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC).

She said a service company was established in London to manage logistics because the NNPC’s financial structure was in disarray.

“They paid for all my hotels, chauffeurs… to allow me to perform the job that I did,” she said.

On the Buckinghamshire property, the former minister said her family stayed at the house over Christmas 2011 because her ex-husband required hospital treatment and could not travel back to Nigeria. She said she played no part in arranging the stay. A second visit, lasting more than two weeks, was used to write a book honouring the Nigerian president’s record on women’s empowerment. “I took it upon myself to put together that book to showcase what he did for women,” she said.

She told the court that a property overlooking Regent’s Park was used for discreet official meetings, while another property she is accused of using was undergoing extensive renovations and was unusable when she visited.

Regarding a flat in St John’s Wood, where she and her mother stayed with rent covered by Nigerian businessman Kolawole Aluko, Alison-Madueke said she had proposed the arrangement as a more cost-effective alternative to paying £2,000-a-night rates at hotels such as the Savoy and Dorchester.

She also told the court she was unaware at the time that one of her chauffeurs had delivered £100,000 in cash to her, saying the money had nothing to do with her.

The court heard how Alison-Madueke rose swiftly through the ranks at Shell, becoming the first senior female executive in its Nigerian operation — a role she said she initially resisted because of the company’s treatment of her father, a tribal leader who had once taken legal action against Shell over what she described as “apartheid practice in West Africa.”

She also expressed frustration with the company’s response to oil spills in the Niger Delta, the region her family came from, saying she did not believe enough had been done to address the damage caused.

On her personal security, she described Nigeria as a “very patriarchal society” where having a woman in a leadership position was “a major no no,” adding that she had faced serious kidnapping threats and that family members had been seized.

In 2015, Alison-Madueke became the first woman elected to lead the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

She denies five counts of accepting bribes and one charge of conspiracy to commit bribery. Also on trial is oil industry executive Olatimbo Ayinde, 54, who denies one count of bribery and one count of bribing a foreign public official.

Her brother, former archbishop Doye Agama, 69, denies conspiracy to commit bribery.

NAIROBI (Kaab TV) – The term of the Somalia Federal Parliament has ended today, marking the end of a four-year term for one of the federal government’s institutions, despite there being no timeline in sight for elections.

The Federal Parliament, comprising the Lower House and the Upper House, had until 14 April 2026 for its four-year term.

The opposition group Himilo Qaran, led by former president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, has declared that it was unfortunate that the term of the parliament has ended and that the country’s state-building process is at risk.

“Himilo Qaran urges that the only solution today is to safeguard the country and reach political consensus agreed upon by all,” said a statement issued today by Himilo Qaran.

The Somali parliament leadership remained tight-lipped on the end of the term.

However, last month, Speaker Aden Mohamed Nur Madobe announced that following a change to the federal constitution, the parliament will remain for another one year.

A term extension of one year is being pushed by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the parliament, according to the opposition alliance the Somali Future Council.

The office of the Somali president did not comment on the matter.

Meanwhile, former president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo warned against a term extension for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, saying it could risk a crisis in the country.

Somalia is facing a security crisis as the terror group Al-Shabaab continues to advance into major rural towns, including those closer to Mogadishu, while the federal government’s security forces are entangled in internal conflict with regional states.

In late March, federal forces backed by clan militia seized the town of Baidoa — the seat of Southwest State — forcing the regional leadership to flee to neighbouring Kenya.

Nowhere is that toll more visible than along its coastline. Stretching over 3,000 kilometres — the longest in Africa — Somalia’s shores have long absorbed the consequences of both climate breakdown and decades of civil instability, during which foreign companies illegally dumped toxic and nuclear waste offshore.

Around 80% of coastal debris originates from land-based activity, and hazardous materials continue to wash ashore to this day.

For the roughly 75% of coastal communities whose livelihoods depend on fishing, the degradation of these waters is not an abstract crisis — it is an daily threat to survival.

But now, a new generation is pushing back.

Every weekend, young university students are giving up their free time to descend on the beach, armed with little more than determination and bin bags.

Hour after hour, they collect rubbish and clear waste by hand — a quiet, unglamorous act of defiance against a crisis they did not create.

For these young men and women, the clean-up is more than environmental action. It is an act of hope — a belief that the land and sea can recover, and that they are the ones who must begin that work.

Here are a collection of photos.
