Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – Early this morning, several mortar rounds struck parts of Wadajir District in Mogadishu.
Reports indicate that some of the mortars landed within the Halane compound, which houses the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and is located within the perimeter of Aden Adde International Airport.
Eyewitnesses near the airport reported hearing at least four consecutive explosions in the area.
Sources suggest that a total of six mortar rounds were fired. While some reportedly hit the Halane camp, the landing locations of the remaining two are unknown. As of now, there is no official confirmation of the extent of the damage caused by the attack.
The militant group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack via online channels shortly after the explosions were heard.
Neither the Somali Federal Government’s security agencies nor ATMIS have released statements confirming the use of artillery or the resulting impact on personnel or infrastructure.
This incident is part of a series of mortar attacks that Al-Shabaab has launched this year, targeting both the Halane compound and areas near the Somali Presidential Palace.
