Radio Marka FM Somalia, an independent radio station based in Marka in the Lower Shabelle region, informs the community, its listeners, and all media organizations that it has temporarily suspended all operations.
This decision follows repeated misunderstandings, work-related pressures, security challenges, and threats involving District Governor of Marka, Osmaan Muse, and certain security officials. These issues have compromised our ability to work freely, independently, and safely.
Challenges Faced Include:
Persistent misunderstandings regarding our media activities, resulting in interference and restrictions that hinder our ability to carry out our journalistic duties.
Pressure, unclear directives issued without due legal process, and acts of intimidation that have created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.
Security concerns affecting our staff, making the safety of personnel and equipment an urgent priority.
Decision to Suspend Operations
In light of these circumstances, the station’s management and technical committee have agreed to:
Temporarily suspend all activities,
Protect the safety and well-being of employees, and
Ensure that future operations can take place in a safe environment that allows the radio to function freely and independently.
This suspension is not a permanent closure. It is a necessary step to safeguard the station and address the challenges currently facing us.
We Call On:
The district administration and security officials to end all interference with the work of Marka FM Somalia.
Media organizations and human rights groups to support efforts to protect press freedom.
The community of Marka to continue supporting us and to understand the circumstances that led to this temporary halt.
Marka FM Somalia reaffirms its commitment to serving the community, delivering reliable information, and upholding professional journalistic standards — and hopes to resume operations as soon as conditions allow.
