Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – Yusuf Adani, the chairman of Karaan District in the Banadir region, made controversial remarks earlier today, warning residents against expressing dissenting views about the Somali government.
Adani claimed that groups were gathering within the district with the intent to target anyone who opposes the federal government. He went on to state that anyone found harboring or sympathizing with government critics would be held accountable and subject to arrest.
“If someone opposes the government, attack his home, even kill him if necessary. You have permission to act. He’s been sent by terrorists—break his bones. Such people do not belong in Karaan. If someone like that is found, arrest him, take him to the police station, and beat him,” Adani declared in a speech that has sparked outrage online.
He also criticized individuals using social media to speak out about the ongoing voter registration process. Adani urged security forces to arrest such individuals and pledged that the district administration would fully cooperate with the authorities and provide testimony to justify their arrest.
Notably, Adani previously served as a security commander in Yaqshid District in 2021, where he worked with the National Security agency under then-opposition leader Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who is now President. At that time, Adani was part of the movement critical of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s administration.
Adani’s remarks have ignited significant backlash on social media, with many users expressing concern over the threat to civil liberties. The public has urged security forces to refrain from suppressing freedom of expression and warned of growing tension between the authorities and local communities.
