Journalists Detained and Tortured by Galmudug President’s Security Guards in Mogadishu

Bodyguards of Galmudug State President Ahmed Abdi Kariye (Qor Qor) have been accused of torturing, threatening, and killing journalists while systematically suppressing independent media in the Somali capital.

MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – Bodyguards of Galmudug State President Ahmed Abdi Kariye (Qor Qor) have been accused of torturing, threatening, and killing journalists while systematically suppressing independent media in the Somali capital.

Journalist Jafar Mohamed Jimale and videographer Abdimajid Abdirahman were forcibly detained for nearly three hours inside the private residence of President Qor Qor in Mogadishu.

The journalists were reportedly covering a protest in the Wadajir district, where demonstrators had gathered to speak out against the government’s eviction of residents from the local fire station.

Sources confirm that the two journalists were not only detained without due process but were also subjected to harassment and physical abuse at the hands of the president’s security detail.

Disturbingly, Qor Qor’s bodyguards are said to have confiscated the journalists’ equipment and shared their recorded footage among themselves.

This incident is part of a growing pattern of media suppression in Mogadishu, where journalists have increasingly become targets amid political tension and widespread public dissatisfaction.

Reports indicate that under the current leadership of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, complaints from displaced citizens and civil unrest have intensified—leading to a harsher crackdown on media personnel covering these developments.

Human rights organizations and press freedom advocates have condemned the ongoing targeting of journalists in Somalia and are calling for immediate investigations into the actions of Galmudug’s security forces.

They urge both federal and regional authorities to ensure accountability and uphold constitutional protections for freedom of the press.

As of now, neither President Qor Qor’s office nor the federal government has issued an official statement regarding the alleged abuse of the journalists.
