Tel Aviv (Kaab TV) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Somaliland is a stable, Muslim, and moderate country that seeks to establish relations with Israel, which he said is what led Israel to recognize it.
Netanyahu, in an interview with Newsmax, said that Somaliland is more stable compared to the rest of Somalia, which he described as being severely affected by terrorism and lacking direct elections for a long time.
“Somaliland is a Muslim country with six million moderate Muslims. They want to join the Abraham Accords, and I see that as a good thing. They have held elections, while the rest of Somalia is plagued by Al-Shabaab and has not held elections for decades,” Netanyahu said.
He added that recognizing Somaliland had become inevitable, given that it is a Muslim country seeking to join the Abraham Accords. He further stated that every country would eventually be compelled to recognize it, adding, “But we were the first.”
Israel’s recognition of Somaliland has faced international pressure and opposition. All countries that participated in the most recent United Nations Security Council meeting condemned the recognition, with the exception of the United States, which said that Israel has the right to recognize Somaliland.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, in a post on X, said that the UN Security Council meeting on the recognition of Somaliland exposed what he described as the hypocrisy of the international community. He stated that the world does not object to the recognition of Palestine, which he described as a non-existent state, while strongly opposing the recognition of Somaliland, which he described as an existing state.
