Israeli Foreign Minister Visits Somaliland Following Recent Recognition

|

Hargeisa (Kaab TV) — Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar arrived in Hargeisa on Wednesday, nearly two weeks after Israel formally recognized Somaliland as an independent state.

During his visit, Saar is expected to meet with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, according to a Somaliland diplomatic source cited by Israeli channel i24NEWS. The two leaders are also scheduled to hold a joint press conference later in the day.

This visit represents the highest-level Israeli delegation to Somaliland since Tel Aviv’s recognition, highlighting Israel’s intent to strengthen political ties despite widespread opposition.

Israel’s recognition, announced last month, drew condemnation from Somalia’s federal government and several regional and international actors, who argue it violates international law and undermines Somalia’s sovereignty.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 after the central government collapsed. Although it has maintained its own administration, security forces, and elections, it has yet to receive formal international recognition.

Somali officials have warned that Israel’s decision could destabilize the Horn of Africa amid ongoing political and security tensions. Countries including Djibouti and several Arab states have reiterated their support for Somalia’s unity in response to the announcement.

While Israeli and Somaliland authorities have not released the full agenda of Saar’s visit, analysts suggest the trip could intensify diplomatic tensions as Somalia seeks international backing against the recognition.
