MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The Israeli government is making strong efforts to persuade other countries to recognize Somaliland, after Israel became the first country to officially recognize Somaliland a few weeks ago.
Israeli media reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a telephone conversation on Wednesday with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which they discussed the issue of recognizing Somaliland. According to available information, Israeli media suggested that India could become the next country to recognize Somaliland.
Israel Hayom reported that India, a strategic partner of Israel in trade and security cooperation, has a strong interest in securing a strategic base along the coast opposite the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Indian trade routes to Europe have been significantly affected by Houthi attacks in the Gulf of Aden, increasing Somaliland’s strategic importance to New Delhi.
During the conversation between Netanyahu and Modi, the two leaders also discussed strengthening cooperation in counterterrorism, improving trade routes, telecommunications, and cooperation in military technology.
Meanwhile, Israel Hayom reported that Israel is holding talks with other countries that share similar interests, including Ethiopia, which has already signed a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland, and Kenya, which faces security threats from Islamist groups based in Somalia.
At the end of last month, Israel officially recognized Somaliland’s independence, becoming the first country in the world to take such a step. This week, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar visited Hargeisa to reinforce Israel’s recognition, a visit that sparked anger and international reactions.
Israel’s decision is said to be based on strategic considerations, as Somaliland is located along one of the world’s most important shipping routes. Amid ongoing Houthi attacks and competition among major powers, the Red Sea has become a critical area for Israel’s national security, with control over these waterways directly affecting trade, energy, and maritime security.
Israel has expressed its desire to play a visible role in shaping the future security and trade architecture of the Horn of Africa.
