BAGHDAD (Kaab TV) – Iraq has launched one of its largest anti-corruption campaigns in recent years, with authorities arresting several prominent politicians, lawmakers, and influential businessmen as part of a sweeping operation aimed at recovering stolen public funds and tackling decades of entrenched corruption.

Prime Minister Ali Al-Saydi issued a stern warning to current and former officials, politicians, and business figures suspected of embezzling state resources, urging them to voluntarily return misappropriated public assets or face arrest and criminal prosecution.

According to reports, the government plans to detain more than 200 current and former officials within the next 72 hours as investigations intensify. Authorities say the operation is focused on tracing and recovering state funds allegedly stolen over the past six months while holding those responsible accountable under Iraqi law.

The anti-corruption drive is part of a broader reform agenda introduced by Prime Minister Al-Saydi, who took office in May this year. At 41 years old, the Iraqi leader has pledged to restore public confidence in state institutions, strengthen accountability, and dismantle corruption networks that have long undermined the country’s governance and economy.

Corruption has remained one of Iraq’s most persistent challenges since the fall of Saddam Hussein’s government in 2003. Successive administrations have faced widespread allegations of mismanagement, bribery, and large-scale embezzlement across key government institutions, despite repeated promises to implement reforms.

Public frustration over corruption has fueled years of nationwide protests, with demonstrators demanding greater transparency, improved public services, job creation, and accountability for officials accused of misusing public funds.

Many Iraqis have welcomed the latest crackdown, viewing it as a significant step toward restoring trust in government institutions and addressing one of the country’s most pressing challenges.

The government has indicated that investigations will continue in the coming weeks, with additional arrests and legal proceedings expected as authorities expand efforts to recover stolen assets and prosecute those implicated in corruption cases.
