Intensifying Conflict in Middle Shabelle Fuels Civilian Crisis in Somalia

|

Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – Ongoing clashes in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region between government forces—supported by international allies—and the terrorist group al-Shabaab have resulted in significant civilian displacement, injuries, and deaths.

According to a recent report by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), medical aid was provided to 20 hospitals across Somalia during the first three months of 2025 alone. In Mogadishu, Medina Hospital treated at least 203 patients wounded in the conflict, marking a 26% increase compared to the previous quarter.

“We have seen a significant increase in firearm injuries, which is a very worrying situation,” said Antoine Grand, head of the ICRC in Somalia. “Civilian lives are at risk.”

The violence has forced over 100,000 people to flee their homes in Middle Shabelle, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation. The displacement coincides with a worsening drought and declining levels of international aid funding.

The ICRC and the Somali Red Crescent are currently carrying out emergency operations to provide medical supplies, clean water, and essential aid to those affected by the conflict.
