Awdheegle (KAAB TV) – New details have emerged about the casualties resulting from a powerful attack carried out by Al-Shabaab this morning in Awdheegle district, Lower Shabelle region. The assault began with explosions, followed by intense direct combat between the militant group and government forces.
Al-Shabaab forces targeted a vehicle laden with explosives at a government base in the district, which led to an ensuing face-to-face battle. Local sources have confirmed that the explosions and subsequent fighting caused significant losses, including both fatalities and injuries, though the exact toll remains unclear.
A brief statement issued by Somalia’s federal government confirmed that Somali National Army (SNA) troops successfully thwarted the attack. The statement praised the bravery of the forces involved in defending the Awdheegle base.
“The Somali National Army has bravely repelled an attack attempt by the Khawarij (Al-Shabaab militants), who sought to disrupt the peace in Awdheegle district,” the statement read.
Additionally, it was reported that the government forces were aware of the militants’ plans and dealt a heavy blow to them during the battle, with ongoing efforts to track down remaining suicide bombers involved in the attack.
The situation in Awdheegle remains tense, with military operations continuing in the area. A statement from the government indicated that serious operations are underway to locate and neutralize the rogue militias.
“Awdheegle district is currently undergoing a major operation to hunt down the militant groups,” the release stated.
This attack follows last week’s bombing and direct assault on a hotel in Beledweyne by Al-Shabaab, which resulted in the deaths of traditional elders and military officers.
Al-Shabaab regularly targets government military bases, often launching ambushes in the early hours of the morning. Despite the consistent nature of these attacks, it seems that the government’s forces have yet to fully adapt to the group’s tactics.
The two Shabelle regions are currently experiencing intense military operations against Al-Shabaab militants, who have been increasing pressure on previously occupied territories near Mogadishu, the nation’s capital.
