President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia has called for Africa to be granted greater representation in global decision-making, arguing that the continent can no longer remain excluded from the United Nations Security Council.

Addressing the General Debate of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Somali president spoke about the challenges facing the international community, including armed conflicts, geopolitical tensions, climate change, and declining confidence in multilateral cooperation.

Hassan Sheikh highlighted Somalia’s recent progress in state-building efforts, citing advances in security, democratic governance, constitutional reforms, education, economic development, and electoral processes.

He said Somalia continues to pursue reforms aimed at strengthening national institutions and promoting inclusive governance.

The president urged world leaders to reinforce the role of the United Nations, restore trust in international institutions, and ensure that global decisions are implemented effectively.

He stressed that Africa should have a stronger voice in shaping international policies and decisions.

“Africa can no longer remain unrepresented on the Security Council,” President Hassan Sheikh said, calling for reforms that would give the continent a greater role in global governance.

On international affairs, the Somali leader reaffirmed Somalia’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and statehood.

He called for a peaceful and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through a two-state solution, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state living alongside Israel in peace and security.
