Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has traveled to the United States to participate in meetings of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where world leaders are gathering to discuss major international and regional issues.

The Somali leader is expected to attend both the General Assembly’s high-level sessions and a series of bilateral meetings focused on Somalia’s political, security, and development priorities.

During the gathering, Hassan Sheikh is expected to address the UN General Assembly, outlining Somalia’s current situation and highlighting key issues facing the country.

His remarks are anticipated to focus on security challenges, political developments, state-building efforts, and international support for Somalia’s security institutions.

The Somali government has placed significant emphasis on strengthening the capabilities of the Somali National Army and other security forces as the country gradually assumes greater responsibility for its own security amid ongoing operations against Al-Shabaab.

On the sidelines of the UN meetings, Hassan Sheikh is also expected to hold discussions with foreign leaders, diplomats, and representatives of international organizations.

Those talks are likely to focus on securing continued political, financial, and security assistance for Somalia, as well as support for ongoing efforts to strengthen national institutions and maintain stability.

The annual UN General Assembly provides Somalia with an important platform to engage international partners, present its priorities to the global community, and seek support for key national objectives, including security, economic development, humanitarian assistance, and regional cooperation.
