Hassan Sheikh Commemorates June 26 Independence Anniversary with Wreath-Laying Ceremony

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Former Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Thursday laid a wreath at the Dhagax-Tuur Monument in Mogadishu in honor of the Somali heroes who sacrificed their lives during the country’s struggle for independence and national liberation.

The ceremony was held as part of events marking the 66th anniversary of June 26, 1960, when the former British Somaliland Protectorate gained independence, becoming the first Somali territory to achieve self-rule. Five days later, on July 1, 1960, it united with the former Italian-administered Trust Territory of Somalia to form the Somali Republic.

During the commemorative event, Hassan Sheikh said the independence movement laid the foundation for the establishment of the Somali state and paid tribute to the generations of nationalists whose sacrifices secured the country’s freedom.

He also called for the preservation of Somalia’s unity, national cohesion, and the values for which the country’s independence heroes fought.

The wreath-laying ceremony forms part of Somalia’s annual Independence Week celebrations, during which the country commemorates the historic events that led to independence and the unification of the two Somali territories into a single republic.

Every year, June 26 is observed across Somalia as a significant national occasion honoring the struggle for self-determination and the contributions of the men and women who played a pivotal role in securing the country’s independence. The anniversary is traditionally marked with patriotic events, official ceremonies, and tributes to Somalia’s founding generation.
