Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Belgrade, Serbia, on Monday to lead Somalia’s delegation at the High-Level Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), scheduled to take place from September 1–2, 2026.

Upon his arrival, President Hassan Sheikh was welcomed by senior Serbian officials. During his visit, he was expected to meet Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and participate in discussions with leaders and representatives attending the gathering.

The Somali delegation included Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali, who had arrived in Belgrade earlier the same day ahead of the summit.

Somalia’s participation at the head-of-state level underscored the country’s commitment to the core principles of the Non-Aligned Movement, including respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the peaceful resolution of disputes.

During the meeting, President Hassan Sheikh was expected to present Somalia’s positions on key regional and international issues and hold a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit.

The Non-Aligned Movement, one of the world’s largest international groupings of developing nations, brings together member states to discuss global political, economic, and security issues.

Somalia has long been a member of the organization and has consistently emphasized the importance of multilateral cooperation, respect for state sovereignty, and international partnerships in addressing regional challenges.

The Belgrade meeting came at a time when Somalia was seeking to strengthen its diplomatic engagement with international partners while advancing efforts to improve security, economic development, and regional cooperation in the Horn of Africa.
