Green Shield Military Exercise Highlights Growing International Support for Somalia’s Security Sector

|

Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – In a powerful demonstration of growing cooperation and shared commitment to regional stability, the European Union, in collaboration with the Somali National Army and the African Union Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), has successfully concluded a high-level joint military exercise known as Operation Green Shield.

Held at the General Dhagabadan Training Center on the outskirts of Mogadishu, the exercise brought together Somali and international forces to simulate complex security threats such as improvised explosive device (IED) attacks, roadside bombs, and remote ambushes—scenarios that Somali forces regularly face in the field.

The objective of the operation was to enhance coordination, improve rapid response capabilities, and strengthen the operational readiness of Somali troops through hands-on, real-time drills. According to officials, this training represents a tangible step toward building a more self-reliant, professional Somali security sector, capable of defending the country from internal threats.

“This was more than a training exercise—it was a symbol of partnership and unity,” said one participant. “We didn’t just train in Somalia, we trained with Somalia. That’s what makes the difference.”

Representatives from the European Union emphasized that the Green Shield exercise sends a clear message: sustainable peace and security in Somalia must come from within, supported by resilient, well-trained national forces. The EU stressed that its support for Somalia is not only strategic but also grounded in long-standing mutual respect and commitment to sovereignty.

The African Union also reiterated its dedication to helping Somalia develop a stable and secure environment, calling the exercise a “milestone in regional peacebuilding efforts.”

AUSSOM officials praised the professionalism and determination of the Somali troops, stating that the exercise showcased their growing capability and confidence.
