Germany Pledges €75 Million to Support Somalia’s Development

|

Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – Germany has pledged €75 million (approximately USD 80 million) to support Somalia’s social and economic development over the next two years, reinforcing a decades-long partnership aimed at fostering stability, growth, and resilience in the Horn of Africa nation.

The agreement was formally signed on Tuesday in Mogadishu between Somalia’s Minister of Planning, Investment, and Economic Development, Mohamed Abdirahman Beene Beene, and senior representatives from Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Under this new cooperation framework, Germany’s support will focus on four key areas:

  1. Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) — strengthening institutions that provide young Somalis with practical skills for employment.

  2. Water Resource Management — expanding access to clean water and improving irrigation systems to combat drought and enhance climate resilience.

  3. Agriculture and Food Security — promoting sustainable farming practices and boosting rural livelihoods.

  4. Rural Development and Governance — enhancing local infrastructure and administrative capacity to support decentralized service delivery.

Minister Beene Beene described the funding as a testament to the “enduring partnership” between Somalia and Germany, which dates back to 1961, the year Somalia established diplomatic relations with the Federal Republic of Germany.

“This agreement reflects our shared commitment to sustainable development and improved living standards for all Somalis,” Minister Beene Beene said. “Germany has been a steadfast partner in supporting Somalia’s recovery, and this renewed cooperation aligns with our National Transformation Plan and ongoing economic reforms.”

The two-year cooperation framework stems from the biennial development consultations held between the two countries, a platform used to review existing programs, evaluate progress, and set new priorities for bilateral assistance.

German officials noted that the funds will be disbursed in phases, ensuring immediate support for ongoing projects while scaling up investments in education, infrastructure, and climate adaptation.

The financing package also includes technical assistance, capacity-building programs, and local partnerships designed to ensure long-term impact.

Germany’s development assistance in Somalia has historically focused on education, renewable energy, governance reforms, and climate resilience.

Past initiatives have helped expand access to vocational training, improve public financial management, and promote renewable energy solutions in rural communities.

“The new funding will strengthen Somalia’s capacity to manage natural resources, create jobs for its youth, and reduce poverty in vulnerable regions,” said a BMZ representative during the signing ceremony.

Minister Beene Beene added that the partnership underscores Somalia’s commitment to transparent and coordinated aid management, ensuring that donor contributions are fully aligned with national priorities.

“We are determined to make sure every euro invested delivers tangible results for the Somali people,” he said. “This cooperation not only strengthens our economic foundation but also deepens our friendship with the people and government of Germany.”

The agreement marks another milestone in the growing collaboration between Somalia and Germany, as both nations work together toward shared goals of peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.
