Farmers living on the outskirts of Garowe, Puntland, have staged a protest against the fencing of agricultural land they say they own and use for farming.
The farmers said they were informed that the land had been designated for the expansion of General Mohamed Abshir Airport, raising concerns about the future of their property and agricultural livelihoods.
They said the fencing began before authorities had clearly explained the airport expansion plan, including the exact area required and the justification for acquiring additional land.
The farmers also accused the company managing the airport and other individuals of pushing the land transfer under the pretext of airport expansion, alleging that private interests may be involved.
These claims have not been independently verified, and the parties accused have yet to issue a formal response.
They said the airport already occupies a large area and argued that any further expansion should be based on a clearly defined plan that takes into account people currently living on or cultivating the land.
The farmers also criticized Garowe district authorities and the Puntland Ministry of Aviation, accusing them of failing to handle the land dispute impartially.
They called for both sides to be heard and for an official committee to establish land ownership, determine the airport’s actual boundaries and assess whether additional land is genuinely required.
They have urged Puntland authorities to intervene and ensure that agricultural land used by local communities for years is not transferred without a clear legal and administrative process.
The dispute comes as Garowe continues to undergo infrastructure development, including efforts to improve aviation services.
The farmers say a lasting solution requires dialogue, verification of land ownership and a transparent determination of the land actually needed for the airport expansion.
