Garowe Elders Reach Agreement to Ease Tensions

A meeting involving prominent elders from Puntland’s Nugaal region has concluded with an agreement aimed at easing political tensions in Garowe and strengthening security, following days of consultations in the regional capital.

According to participants, the discussions focused on reinforcing security, preserving Puntland’s unity, and adopting a unified position on Somalia’s evolving political situation. The talks were also intended to prevent further escalation amid recent tensions in Garowe.

Preliminary information from a meeting held on Monday night indicates that the parties agreed to de-escalate the situation by withdrawing opposing forces from positions they have occupied in parts of the city. The move is seen as a key confidence-building measure to restore stability.

The agreement also reportedly provides for the return of Commander Jimcaale Jama Takar to Garowe, a step viewed as part of broader efforts to rebuild trust and normalize the security situation in the Puntland capital.

In addition, the parties are said to have agreed to launch reconciliation efforts between Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni and Commander Jimcaale Jama Takar, whose dispute has been widely regarded as one of the main factors behind the recent political and security tensions.

The understanding further calls for expanding the committee previously established to resolve the Garowe crisis by including additional respected figures, among them former Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole and veteran politician Said Hirsi Bulhan, in an effort to broaden mediation and strengthen the peace process.

Puntland authorities have not yet issued an official statement confirming the reported terms of the agreement, and no formal comments have been released by the other parties involved. However, local observers say the reported breakthrough could help reduce tensions and create space for continued dialogue if fully implemented.
