Galgaduud (Kaab TV) – At least 12 civilians have been confirmed dead, while more than eight others were injured in a landmine explosion that occurred this morning in the Kud-kudaaleey area, under Masagawaay district in the Galgaduud region.

The explosion struck a pickup truck (locally known as Laylo-calaawi) carrying nearly 20 passengers who were traveling from the central regions toward Mogadishu.

Reports indicate that the landmine was detonated by Al-Shabaab militants after the passengers refused to pay extortion money that had been demanded from them.

Eyewitnesses said the casualties were severe, with some of the passengers suffering extensive injuries, making it difficult to distinguish between men and women.

A mother and her children were among those killed in the blast, including one infant who was only a few months old.

Further reports state that Al-Shabaab had ordered travelers to pay six dollars per person, while vehicles were required to pay 35 dollars, particularly those traveling from the central regions to Mogadishu via Middle Shabelle.

The group has also reportedly instructed travelers to use only areas under its control when heading to Mogadishu, warning that strict action would be taken against anyone who disobeys these orders.
