Members of the Gaaljecel community from across Europe gathered in Helsinki for a meeting focused on strengthening community ties, preserving cultural heritage, and discussing the role of the Somali diaspora.
The event brought together youth, academics, poets, community leaders, and other members of the Somali diaspora, who exchanged views on the importance of safeguarding history, culture, and intergenerational connections.
Organizers and youth volunteers were widely praised for their efforts in planning the gathering, which participants described as an important platform for dialogue, networking, and community development among Gaaljecel communities across Europe.
A number of Finnish local council members, intellectuals, and cultural figures also attended, highlighting the importance of education, cultural preservation, and greater engagement by the Somali diaspora in social development.
A key part of the meeting focused on the history and heritage of the Gaaljecel community, with speakers emphasizing the need to document and preserve historical knowledge for future generations.
One of the speakers, Abdalle Ahmed Mumin, stressed the importance of preserving collective memory, saying:
“We are not merely a clan; we are a people. When a people’s history is lost, everyone else interprets it for them.”
Participants said the gathering underscored the importance of connecting younger generations with their cultural roots while encouraging them to use the educational and professional opportunities available in their host countries.
The event also featured contributions from poets and cultural figures, who highlighted the role of Somali literature and oral tradition in preserving language, history, and identity.
The Helsinki gathering was seen as an opportunity to strengthen unity among Gaaljecel communities across Europe and explore future initiatives in education, culture, and community development.
