Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed met with U.S. Ambassador to Somalia, Richard Riley, in Mogadishu to discuss the country’s political and security developments, as well as efforts to strengthen state-building initiatives.
The meeting emphasized reinforcing the longstanding relationship between Somalia and the United States and explored strategies to promote political stability ahead of Somalia’s general elections scheduled for next year.
“We discussed the overall situation in Somalia, particularly matters of security and politics, and the importance of advancing the state-building process, which is fundamental to achieving lasting political stability,” Sharif said in a statement following the meeting.
Sharif also expressed his gratitude to the United States for its ongoing support in key areas such as security, counterterrorism, and humanitarian assistance.
The discussions come at a time of heightened diplomatic activity aimed at unifying Somalia’s political leadership and supporting the country’s democratic transition. The U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to helping Somalia establish strong and effective government institutions, despite the prevailing political and security challenges.
