Forced Evictions in Mogadishu Leave Families Displaced and Desperate

|

MOGADISHU (KAAB TV) – In recent months, the Somali capital of Mogadishu has witnessed a wave of forced evictions targeting people living in public-interest areas and informal settlements. This trend has left hundreds of families displaced, many of whom have lived in these areas for years.

Several of the evicted residents have come forward to speak to the media, alleging that their homes and land were seized without warning or legal justification. Many claim the evictions were carried out by force, pushing some families to flee Mogadishu entirely, seeking refuge in more remote regions of the country.

One displaced resident, Abdi Yusuf Ali, described the escalating violence and deteriorating conditions in the city:

“There is a lot of violence happening in Mogadishu. We’re struggling to survive. Sometimes, we go the whole day with just one meal. I used to sell nuts to make a living, but now I have no future. I can’t afford anything, and even when I try to borrow money to buy basic goods like peanuts, I’m denied. Sometimes I’m forced to sleep outside, with no shelter.”

Across Mogadishu, it’s now common to see women, children, and the elderly walking through the streets, carrying their belongings on their backs or in their hands. These scenes paint a grim picture of a humanitarian crisis unfolding in plain sight.

Despite the urgency of the situation, local and international humanitarian organizations operating in Mogadishu have been notably absent. Many displaced people say they have yet to receive any assistance or support, whether in the form of food, shelter, or basic services.

The situation has grown increasingly dire since the evictions began. Entire neighborhoods have been emptied, leaving once-bustling communities in ruins. The lack of official intervention and support has deepened the suffering of those affected, raising serious questions about the humanitarian response in the capital.

As the crisis unfolds, residents are calling on the Somali government and the international community to intervene and protect the rights of vulnerable populations facing displacement, hunger, and insecurity in Mogadishu.
