Five members of the House of Representatives of Somalia’s Northeastern State have announced their resignation from parliament, saying they had lost confidence in the direction of the administration and its failure to fulfill the objectives for which it was established.
In a joint statement, the lawmakers said they had spent the past year assessing the administration’s performance after witnessing the way the government was formed and concluding that the aspirations they had for governance in Las Anod had not been realized.
They said they had repeatedly attempted to address what they viewed as serious shortcomings, but their recommendations were ignored, ultimately leaving them with no option but to resign.
The lawmakers added that they would soon provide further details regarding their future political direction and outline their vision for advancing the interests of the people.
The five lawmakers who resigned are:
- Makhtal Said Mohamoud
- Ahmed Aabi Hassan
- Abdisalan Abdullahi Mohamed
- Sadik Jama Muse
- Ahmed Ali Mohamed
In a separate development, the Office of the Attorney General of Somalia’s Northeastern State has formally petitioned the Speaker of the House of Representatives to lift the parliamentary immunity and membership privileges of the five former lawmakers so they can face criminal prosecution before the competent courts.
Attorney General Abdullahi Hirsi Ilmi said the request seeks the removal of immunity for the same five legislators, arguing that legal proceedings should be allowed to move forward.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, the request is based on Articles 50 and 51 of the Northeastern State Constitution, as well as Articles 184, 218, and 221 of the Somali Penal Code.
The office said these provisions grant judicial authorities the legal power to seek the removal of parliamentary immunity when allegations require criminal investigation and prosecution.
The developments come amid growing political tensions within the Northeastern State administration, with the simultaneous resignations and the Attorney General’s legal request likely to deepen the ongoing political dispute over the administration’s future direction.
