European Union has Extended Operations Against Piracy Until 2027

|

Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – The European Union has extended the duration of the Atalanta operation and the European Union Training Mission (EUTM) in Somalia until February 28, 2027.

The extension, announced in December, also includes the European Union Capability Enhancement Mission (EUCAP Somalia). It follows a review to strengthen the EU’s response to emerging security challenges in one of the world’s most geographically important regions.

The European Union said that the Atalanta operation will continue the operation to fight piracy and disrupt illegal activities on the coast of Somalia, the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.

The mission will be strengthened in cooperation with the Aspides mission, which protects commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

The Maritime Security Center in the Horn of Africa (MSC-HOA) coordinates maritime operations and will be renamed the Indian Ocean Maritime Security Center to reflect its expanded role.

The Atlanta operation has been going on since 2008.

On the ground side, EUTM Somalia said it will provide strategic advice and training to Somalia’s security forces, while EUCAP Somalia will help with maritime law enforcement and police.

According to the European Peace Center, Somali forces will continue to receive EU-funded equipment and logistical support. The European Union delegation will also cooperate with Djibouti.

The next review of the EU’s presence in the region is expected before the new mandate expires in 2027.
