Ethiopia Transfers 220 Somali National Army Personnel to Addis Ababa

|

Reports emerging from the Somali Regional State indicate that the Ethiopian government has transferred nearly 220 Somali military personnel to the capital, Addis Ababa, following an extended period of detention at the Garab Case military camp in Jigjiga.

According to reports, Ethiopian forces transported the soldiers by bus to the capital yesterday after keeping them at Garab Case camp.

As of now, no official statement has been issued detailing the precise operational rationale for transferring these personnel to Addis Ababa or clarifying their upcoming detention facility.

These troops were reportedly among the units that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud presided over during a graduation ceremony in August at the Xananbuure military site, located in the Galgaduud region of the Galmudug administration.

Field reports suggest that the soldiers were on authorized leave in sectors of the Somali Regional State when they were apprehended by Ethiopian authorities.

However, independent details regarding the specific circumstances surrounding their capture and the underlying justification for their detention have not been officially disclosed.

According to Ethiopian security officials, the administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed believes that these troops received training funded or facilitated by the Egyptian government and were ultimately en route to sectors within the Jubaland administration.

These allegations coincide with ongoing political and diplomatic rifts between Somalia and Ethiopia.

Nevertheless, no official details have been published to independently verify claims regarding Egyptian military training or the intended destination of the personnel.

Relations between Somalia and Ethiopia have faced heightened tensions recently, driven by ongoing regional political and security developments.

The government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed recently expressed concerns regarding President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s alignment and diplomatic ties with Egypt and Eritrea.

Meanwhile, Somalia maintains active partnerships with these nations, with regional security cooperation and military alliances featuring prominently on their mutual diplomatic agendas.

Regional observers are closely monitoring how both governments will respond to the detention of the Somali soldiers and whether formal diplomatic negotiations will be convened to resolve the issue.

The Federal Government of Somalia has not yet issued an official statement regarding reports that nearly 220 of its personnel were detained by Ethiopian forces, held at Jigjiga, and subsequently transferred to Addis Ababa.
