Addis Ababa (KAAB TV) – Ethiopia was elected on Wednesday as a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) during the 46th meeting of the Executive Council in Addis Ababa, which will last for three years.
Ethiopia won the East African seat with 38 votes, ahead of Rwanda and Somalia who received one vote and ten votes.
AUPSC membership now gives Addis Ababa greater leverage in matters of peace and security, particularly in Somalia and the entire Horn of Africa, a region characterized by constant instability.
Ethiopia’s election has come at a time when it wants to increase its influence in the African Union Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The Somali officials have recently confirmed that the challenges faced by Ethiopia to fully participate in AUSSOM have been resolved, and it is expected that the final information on the form and number of Ethiopian troops that will be included in this mission will be finalized soon.
