NAIROBI (KAAB TV) – The governments of Egypt and Eritrea have convened an emergency meeting in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, following the visit of Ethiopia’s Prime Minister to Mogadishu.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali visited Mogadishu on Thursday as part of efforts to bring an end to the year-long conflict between Ethiopia and Somalia.
Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, arrived in Asmara on Saturday and held talks with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki.
In October 2024, Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia formed a tripartite partnership aimed at countering Ethiopia’s influence in the Red Sea. However, the tripartite alliance has now been sidelined as the Somali government has opted to engage directly with Ethiopia, a move that has angered both Egypt and Eritrea.
Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Meskel confirmed that the two governments are holding talks to address the situation in the Horn of Africa.
“As part of ongoing bilateral discussions, President Isaias Afwerki met last night with a delegation from Egypt led by Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty at the Denden Guest House,” the minister stated.
“The discussions covered strengthening cooperation between the two countries and regional issues, particularly concerning the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, both of which hold strategic importance for both nations,” he added.
