Djibouti Police Break Up Violent Gang Preying on Couples in Armed Robberies

|

Djibouti (Kaab TV) – Djibouti’s National Police have dismantled a criminal network specialized in violently extorting couples, following a series of armed robberies on the outskirts of the capital, authorities announced on Tuesday.

Active since early 2026, the group targeted victims in the Agadhereh, Chebeley, Nagad, Tora Bora, and Barwaqo 2 neighborhoods, as well as areas surrounding Balbala University.

Police investigators reported that the gang used a sophisticated “bait” tactic, deploying a female member to lure couples on motorcycles to isolated locations. The suspects then threatened them with knives and machetes to steal cash and mobile phones, often resorting to violence if the victims resisted.

The 4th District Police confirmed the arrest of the gang’s leader and three primary accomplices, including one woman. All four were formally identified by their victims.

The operation also led to the recovery of several weapons, including a machete found in Tora Bora, and the arrest of six individuals accused of reselling the stolen goods.

The gang leader and the three main accomplices have been detained at the Gabode Penitentiary Centre, while the six alleged resellers were released after receiving formal legal warnings.

In a statement, the National Police urged the public to remain vigilant and advised against visiting isolated areas in Agadhereh and Nagad.
