Clan-Related Killings Fuel Tensions in Qoryoley

|

Tensions have risen in Qoryoley district in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region following a series of killings that reportedly triggered an armed confrontation between local groups, with the latest violence believed to be linked to longstanding clan-related grievances.

Reports from Qoryoley indicate that the confrontation followed the killing of a local man.

His body was reportedly dragged and left near the district’s outskirts, an incident that further inflamed tensions and prompted members of the victim’s community to take up arms and confront those suspected of involvement in the killing.

Local sources said gunfire was exchanged for a short period between groups involved in the dispute before the situation partially calmed. Sporadic gunshots were reportedly heard in some areas where the confrontation occurred, however, suggesting that tensions remain high.

The latest incident is also reportedly connected to an earlier killing in the district involving a man who was said to have worked as a driver.

That killing occurred about a month ago, according to local accounts, and the latest violence has revived fears that the unresolved dispute could develop into a cycle of retaliatory killings.

Residents have provided differing accounts about the circumstances surrounding the killings and the identities of those responsible. Some have expressed concern that previous clan tensions in the area could resurface if the dispute is not addressed quickly through mediation and dialogue.

Security forces from Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) in Qoryoley are reportedly responding to the situation and are seeking to arrest a person suspected of involvement in the killing and bring the suspect before the law.

Local sources said the suspect may still be inside the district or in surrounding areas, while security forces are conducting efforts to locate and apprehend the individual.

However, NISA and Qoryoley district authorities have not issued an official statement confirming the information.

Unconfirmed reports also indicate that the latest violence has resulted in deaths and injuries. Residents fear that failure to contain the situation could lead to further clashes and spread violence to other parts of the district.

There have also been reports that the Qoryoley district police commander and several members of his security detail were killed in incidents linked to the unrest.

These reports, along with information concerning a victim identified as Mursal, have not yet been independently confirmed by authorities.

Qoryoley is located in Lower Shabelle, a region that has faced overlapping security challenges, including Al-Shabaab attacks, military operations by Somali government and allied forces, and periodic clashes between local communities.

A report by the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) has identified Qoryoley among the districts in Lower Shabelle that have experienced significant security incidents.

The report also documented previous communal violence in the district that resulted in deaths and displacement.

EUAA specifically cited a 2024 confrontation in Qoryoley involving groups associated with the Jiido and Garre communities.

According to information compiled by the agency, at least two people were killed and thousands were displaced from parts of the district as a result of the fighting.

Qoryoley has experienced similar tensions at different times, with the district’s security situation affected by both community disputes and attacks by armed groups.

In 2022, Qoryoley district commissioner Sayid Ali Ibrahim Mohamed was killed in a roadside bomb attack inside the district. One of his guards was also killed in the explosion.

The latest unrest comes as the broader security situation in Lower Shabelle remains fragile. Although towns such as Qoryoley are under the control of the Somali government and its allies, large areas of the surrounding countryside remain vulnerable to armed attacks and military operations.

Residents are calling on all parties involved in the dispute to halt the violence and prevent an individual killing from turning into a cycle of retaliation affecting wider families and communities.

Security authorities and local leaders are expected to strengthen their presence in the district and work with traditional elders to prevent further clashes.

Community mediation could be particularly important in addressing the underlying grievances and preventing revenge attacks.

As of now, there is no comprehensive official account confirming the number of people killed or wounded, identifying those formally accused of the killings, or establishing the precise circumstances that triggered the latest confrontation.

The situation in Qoryoley remains closely watched, with the immediate challenge being whether security forces, local authorities and traditional elders can contain the tensions before the recent killings develop into a wider communal conflict that threatens civilians and disrupts life in the district.
