Baidoa on Edge as Military Movements Raise Fears of New Clashes

|

The security situation in Baidoa and surrounding areas in Somalia’s South West State has become increasingly tense following reports of significant military movements involving forces aligned with rival political factions, raising fears of renewed armed confrontations.

Reports from multiple sources indicate that forces belonging to the Darawish faction loyal to South West State President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen have increased their presence on the outskirts of Baidoa.

However, their precise location, intended destination and operational objectives have not been independently verified.

Some residents said military movements overnight appeared different from previous troop activity, heightening concerns about the city’s security.

Residents also reported hearing gunfire on the outskirts of Baidoa, allegedly involving government forces.

There has been no independent confirmation of where the shooting occurred, what prompted it or whether it involved a direct exchange of fire between opposing forces.

The reported movements come amid an ongoing political and security dispute in South West State, where rival factions have been strengthening their security preparations.

Previously circulated videos attributed to forces supporting Laftagareen showed armed personnel claiming to be heading towards Baidoa.

However, the footage has not been independently verified, and its recording date, precise location and the current whereabouts of the troops remain unclear.

Meanwhile, government forces and troops aligned with Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur, commonly known as Adan Madobe, have reportedly been conducting their own military preparations in Baidoa and surrounding areas.

The reported activity comes as concerns grow over the possibility of a confrontation between the rival camps.

Adan Madobe is a central figure in the political contest over the leadership and administration of South West State. However, further verified information is needed to establish the extent of the government-aligned forces’ control over the city and the surrounding territory.

Additional reports suggest that Commander Adow Mohamed Abdi and forces under his command have joined the faction supporting Laftagareen.

The commander was reportedly previously associated with officers serving in the Eighth Battalion of the Somali National Army’s 60th Division.

If confirmed, the reported defection could affect the military balance between the rival factions. However, the number of troops under his command, their equipment, current positions and the potential operational impact of their reported move remain unverified.

The situation in Baidoa is likely to depend on developments around the city, the response of government-aligned forces and the political decisions made by the competing factions.

Continued military movements without efforts to ease tensions could increase the risk of clashes, potentially threatening civilians and disrupting movement within and around the city.

Residents are particularly vulnerable if fighting or gunfire reaches densely populated areas. Renewed clashes could also deepen insecurity in a region already affected by political divisions and security challenges.

Political dialogue and efforts to prevent armed confrontation could help contain the tensions.

For now, reports point to heightened military activity and growing uncertainty, but there is no independently verified evidence that a large-scale attack is being planned, that the reported forces are about to enter the city, or that a direct clash has taken place.

The situation remains fluid, and claims concerning troop deployments, possible operations and potential casualties require confirmation from reliable, independent sources.
