NAIROBI, Kenya (Kaab TV) — Kenyan detectives have arrested two Somali women in Nairobi after seizing what authorities say was counterfeit US currency worth $560,000, equivalent to nearly 70 million Kenyan shillings, during a security operation in the capital.

The operation, carried out on Friday, was confirmed by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday.

Officers from the Nairobi regional office acted on intelligence and raided a location in the Upper Hill area, where the suspects, identified as Ifrah Ali Jeyte and Qamar Salat Abdi, were taken into custody.

According to the DCI, detectives recovered bundles of $100 notes concealed inside a handbag. The cash was later counted at the DCI Nairobi Area Headquarters, confirming the total amount seized.

Both women remain in custody as investigators continue their probe ahead of possible court proceedings. Officials emphasized that the case is ongoing.

The DCI urged the public to report suspicious activity linked to financial crimes through its anonymous tip-off lines, stressing the importance of public cooperation in disrupting counterfeit currency networks.

Kenya, which shares a porous border with Somalia, has increasingly been a target of money laundering and terrorism financing.

In March 2025, the United States warned that unregulated trade between the two countries facilitates illicit financial flows.

Kenya’s National Terrorism Financing Risk Assessment Report, published in December 2023, identified Somalia as the highest-risk source of terrorism financing entering Kenya through both legal and illegal channels.

The report also noted that large sums of money collected within Somalia and entering Kenya pose a significant threat.

Counterfeit and smuggling cases are not new. In October 2022, six Somali women were arrested attempting to smuggle 103 million Kenyan shillings in cash through Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) — A major complaint has been filed with the German National Contact Point of the OECD by the Somalia Accountability & Transparency Organization (SATO-USA), led by Somali Member of Parliament and anti-corruption advocate Dr. Abdillahi Hashi Abib.

The complaint accuses the Bavarian State Mint and two other German firms of producing and marketing gold and silver coins as official currency of the Republic of Somalia without legal authorization since 2004.

The coins in question, including the widely circulated “Somalia Gold and Silver Elephant” and “Leopard” bullion series, have been marketed globally as legal Somali tender.

They feature the Somali coat of arms and are denominated in Somali Shillings.

The annual issues, prized by collectors and investors for their artistry and high purity, are minted in .9999 fine gold and .999 fine silver, with some also issued in platinum.

According to the complaint, neither the Central Bank of Somalia nor the federal government approved or benefited from this program.

Suspicions from numismatic whistleblowers

Dr. Abib—who also chairs the Accountability and Transparency Caucus in Somalia’s House of the People—began investigating after Parliament raised concerns about the Central Bank’s oversight.

His findings confirmed long-standing suspicions from numismatic whistleblowers that the coin program was an unauthorized scheme, sustained by bribery and manipulation involving individuals posing as Somali government agents.

“The Central Bank has no records of this coinage and has received no revenues or royalties,” said Dr. Jonathan Levy, legal counsel for SATO-USA. “This may be one of the largest known cases of a developed country exploiting a fragile state’s identity for profit. Germany must be held to account.”

The complaint alleges that in addition to unauthorized minting, some of the coins were designed to mock or insult Somali culture.

One example cited is a 2020 gold coin featuring former U.S. President Donald Trump on one side and the Somali national emblem on the other. Other coins reportedly depict Catholic Popes, saints, and religious icons, despite Somalia’s strict adherence to Shariah law.

Dr. Abib’s inquiry traced the operation to several German firms, including Commonwealth Mint and Philatelic Bureau Ltd., a subsidiary of Heimerle + Meule GmbH. In October 2024, he formally notified these entities that they may be violating the Somali Penal Code, including laws prohibiting the counterfeiting of state seals.

The Bavarian State Mint subsequently directed Commonwealth Mint’s leadership to respond to the allegations.

Dr. Abib contends the case underscores a broader pattern of exploitation of nations with weak institutions: “While Somalia is often blamed for corruption, this case shows how European entities benefit from impunity and lack of oversight when dealing with vulnerable countries.”

The OECD complaint now awaits review by German authorities, while pressure mounts for a full investigation into the conduct of the Bavarian State Mint and its partners.

HARGEISA (Kaab TV) – The Hargeisa City Council, in partnership with the Taiwan Mission in Somaliland, has completed the construction of the 6 km “Taiwan Avenue,” a major new road linking Hargeisa International Airport (Egal) to the main highway in central Hargeisa.

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by Taiwan’s Ambassador to Somaliland, Allen Lou; Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdirahman Aden; Minister of Interior, Abdalle Mohamed Arab; and the Mayor of Hargeisa, Abdikarim Ahmed Mooge.

“This project was initiated by Mayor Mooge with the aim of creating a direct gateway between Egal International Airport and the heart of the city,” said Ambassador Lou.

He said the Government of Taiwan was proud to have co-funded 70 percent of the road construction.

Hargeisa Municipality covered 30 percent of the cost.

Mayor Mooge emphasized the road’s impact on city access and ease for travellers to and from the Egal Airport in Hargeisa.

“Taiwan Avenue will greatly improve traffic flow and the city’s overall appearance. We extend our sincere thanks to the government of Taiwan for its generous support,” Mayor Moge said.

Ease access of movement for millions

The project, jointly led by Hargeisa City Council and the Taiwan Mission, faced several challenges during construction, which led to adjustments in the original design.

Despite these hurdles, the road has now been completed and is expected to benefit the daily movement of thousands of residents and visitors to the capital.

Taiwan and Somaliland, two self-governing entities without widespread international recognition, have been steadily building bilateral ties.

Earlier this year, Taiwan announced a $22 million investment for the construction of a general hospital in Hargeisa — another major infrastructure initiative strengthening the relationship between the two partners.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Egyptian immigration authorities briefly detained the Mayor of Mogadishu, Mohamed Ahmed Amir, and three members of his office at Cairo Airport on Friday due to a forged visa used to enter the country.

Mayor Amir was in transit from Mogadishu to Saudi Arabia.

Despite flying from Mogadishu Airport, the authenticity of his visa was not checked by local authorities, a Somalia Embassy officer told Kaab TV.

Cairo Airport officials also confirmed that several members of the mayor’s team had no visas at all.

As a result, Mayor Amir and three members of his staff were held for six hours at the airport.

The Somali Embassy in Cairo intervened, leading to the release of the mayor and his staff.

A source at the embassy indicated that Mayor Amir had been issued a fake visa by a fraudulent travel agency in Mogadishu.

Somalia has a known issue with scammers who deceive travelers with false visas and even foreign passports in exchange for payment.

In the past, government officials, including immigration officers, have been implicated in these scams.

In March, the new immigration head in Mogadishu announced the dismissal of several immigration and police officers found to be part of an organized human trafficking network that sent people through the Libyan Sahara, where many victims were held for ransom.

Furthermore, in November last year, Ireland arrested a Somali diplomat based in Saudi Arabia who was involved in human trafficking despite working at the Somali embassy in Riyadh.

He was arrested upon arrival at Dublin airport in November.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Continued fighting and worsening drought conditions have displaced more than 110,000 people across Somalia in recent weeks, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Wednesday.

The displacement is largely due to renewed conflict in Puntland State, in northeastern Somalia, and ongoing violence in Middle and Lower Shabelle regions, which fall under Hirshabelle and South West States.

OCHA warns that 4.6 million people in Somalia are projected to face high levels of hunger this year.

“In Middle and Lower Shabelle, clashes between Somali National Army forces and non-state armed groups have forced over 30,000 people from 20 villages to flee, many of whom have taken refuge in Middle Shabelle and the capital, Mogadishu,” OCHA stated in its latest humanitarian update.

Security concerns in contested areas

Al-Shabaab militants continue to carry out deadly attacks in southern and central Somalia as they attempt to advance towards Mogadishu.

Security concerns in contested areas such as Aden Yabal and Cadale in Middle Shabelle are severely restricting humanitarian access, the UN said.

This includes the closure of two nutrition facilities and all mobile health and nutrition services in Adan Yabaal district.

“Humanitarian needs are rapidly rising amidst access challenges, compounded by worsening dry conditions and rising water prices,” OCHA said.

In Puntland, nearly 800,000 people are facing acute water and food shortages due to failed 2024 Deyr rains and bleak forecasts for the upcoming 2025 Gu’ season.

The situation is forcing large-scale displacement of both people and livestock.

Military operations and inter-clan clashes have displaced over 70,000 people, including 10,000 from Qandala district in Bari region.

OCHA is currently analyzing data from rapid needs assessments to gauge the full extent of the humanitarian crisis.

The findings will inform targeted responses by aid agencies.

Additionally, prolonged dry conditions in hard-to-reach areas like Xarardheere district in Mudug have caused widespread livestock deaths, deepening the livelihood crisis.

The UN warns that both conflict and climate shocks are now driving displacement across Somalia, creating urgent and complex humanitarian challenges.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The Director General of the Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA), Mustafa Duhulow, chaired a high-level meeting with senior officials from Citizenship, Investigation, and Border Management departments, alongside advisors and office heads.

The meeting focused on strengthening the Somali passport system and addressing the increasing misuse of travel documents for illegal migration.

This comes as Somalia faces a growing human trafficking crisis, with reports of traffickers exploiting vulnerable individuals using Somali passports.

Officials presented reports detailing the challenges in passport recognition and measures needed to curb unlawful migration.

ICA Director General Mustafa Duhulow emphasized the urgency of improving service delivery and cracking down on trafficking networks.

“We must accelerate our efforts against illegal migration and human trafficking. Relevant departments must remain vigilant to protect Somali youth and prevent traffickers from exploiting vulnerable individuals,” Duhulow said in a statement.

Trafficking Through Mogadishu Airport

Meanwhile, Artan Mohamed Artan, head of Mogadishu Border Control, told Kaab TV that authorities have started intercepting individuals being trafficked through Aden Adde International Airport.

“We regularly rescue young men and women who are in the hands of traffickers attempting to smuggle them through Libya and Algeria,” Artan said.

According to Artan, some of those rescued have been reunited with their families, while officials closely monitor the travel of young people aged 19-25, the primary targets of traffickers.

Human trafficking remains a severe and persistent issue in Somalia, fueled by conflict, economic hardship, corruption, and weak governance.

The country is both a source and transit hub for trafficking, with victims subjected to forced labor, sexual exploitation, and recruitment by armed groups.

The U.S. Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report consistently ranks Somalia among the lowest globally (Tier 3) due to the lack of anti-trafficking laws and weak enforcement.

Corrupt officials and porous borders further enable trafficking networks to operate with impunity.

In a recent development, a Somali diplomat was arrested in Ireland for his involvement in an international human trafficking network.

The diplomat, who was based in Saudi Arabia, allegedly sold Somali diplomatic and service passports to traffickers smuggling people into Europe.

He was detained in Dublin after flying in from Dubai in November last year, exposing a network that exploited diplomatic privileges to facilitate illegal migration.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is now grappling with a significant dilemma following his decision to align with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali after a year-long period of tension between Somalia and Ethiopia.

His swift move towards rapprochement with Ethiopia has raised concerns among some of Somalia’s traditional allies, particularly Eritrea and Egypt.

Last Thursday, Prime Minister Abiy was warmly received in Mogadishu, where he held bilateral talks with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and key members of the Somali cabinet.

This visit followed the mediation efforts of Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in December, with support from European partners.

The discussions between Somalia and Ethiopia centered on resolving tensions that flared after Ethiopia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Somaliland. That MOU agreement granted Addis Ababa access to the Red Sea, the establishment of a 20-kilometer naval military base, and port access.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Somali President’s Office noted that the meeting between President Mohamud and Prime Minister Abiy “focused on strengthening cooperation in security, economic, and social spheres.”

Both leaders emphasized the historical ties and longstanding neighborly relations between their nations, underlining mutual respect for sovereignty and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs.

Abiy was escorted to Lido Beach in what was described as a symbolic gesture of improving relations with Mogadishu following last year’s tensions over Ethiopia’s attempts to secure sea access. | PHOTO/ OFFICIAL.

Prime Minister Abiy, following his visit, expressed his appreciation for the reception.

“We held extensive discussions on a range of areas, including peace and security, economy, diplomacy, and the potential to build joint infrastructure,” Prime Minister Abiy wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“We held extensive discussions on a range of areas, including peace and security, economy, diplomacy, and the potential to build joint infrastructure,”- Prime Minister Abiy

With financial backing from the UAE, Ethiopia plans to build a new naval base, acquire high-speed navy vessels, and diversify its port utilization, which has traditionally relied on Djibouti.

While this MOU remains in place, the Somali Federal Government has now proposed a new deal, allowing the Ethiopian army to rejoin the AUSSOM mission in Somalia and granting the Ethiopian Navy access to Somali waters, especially the Red Sea.

Furthermore, under the Hassan Sheikh-Abiy agreement, Ethiopia will also receive a new port with 100% access and management rights.

Further regional tensions

Though these developments could be viewed as a potential breakthrough in alleviating tensions in the Horn of Africa, it is clear that the situation remains far from stable.

The Somali government’s shift has already ignited further tensions, particularly with Eritrea and Egypt, Ethiopia’s most vocal regional adversaries.

On Saturday, an Egyptian delegation led by Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty arrived in Asmara to meet with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki.

The meeting, described by Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Meskel, aimed to address key regional issues, including the conflict in Sudan, nation-building in Somalia, and the challenges of peace and security in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea regions.

On Saturday, an Egyptian delegation led by Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty arrived in Asmara to meet with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki. | PHOTO/OFFICIAL.

Since October 2024, Eritrea, Egypt, and Somalia had held tripartite meetings focused on isolating Ethiopia and blocking Addis Ababa’s attempts to gain access to the Red Sea.

This cooperative effort was primarily in response to Ethiopia’s increasing geopolitical ambitions, particularly regarding the Red Sea and Somaliland, as well as its security moves in the region.

According to a senior diplomat in the region, Somalia’s alignment with Ethiopia could be perceived as a betrayal by Egypt and Eritrea, effectively weakening their stance against Ethiopia’s expansionist ambitions.

“Egypt and Eritrea could retaliate diplomatically, economically, and militarily if Somalia shifts towards Ethiopia, viewing it as a direct threat to their strategic interests in the Red Sea and Horn of Africa,” said the diplomat, who requested anonymity.

The Ethiopia-Somalia agreement brokered by Turkey came as a shock to Egypt and Eritrea. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been at odds with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, largely due to Turkey’s support for groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood, which Egypt has long sought to suppress.

In December, Egyptian President al-Sisi expressed his concern, stating that he was closely monitoring the agreement between Ethiopia and Somalia, hoping it would contribute to security and stability in the Horn of Africa.

This statement came shortly after al-Sisi spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron, with France being a key partner in Ethiopia’s infrastructure development, particularly in the aviation, railway systems, and military sectors.

In 2023 alone, France exported over $383 million in goods to Ethiopia, including planes, helicopters, and spacecraft valued at $160 million.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry has made it clear that it strongly opposes Ethiopia’s ambitions to gain access to the Red Sea, seeing such moves as a direct threat to Egypt’s national security and regional stability.

“We will not accept any foreign military presence on the Red Sea coast,” Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stated on January 11.

“We will not accept any foreign military presence on the Red Sea coast,” – Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty .

Cairo is especially concerned that Ethiopia’s presence on the Red Sea could undermine Egypt’s strategic interests and influence in this crucial maritime corridor.

Aware of these concerns, Somalia’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi was forced on numerous occasions to deny “allowing Ethiopia access to the Red Sea.”

In response to Ethiopia’s aspirations, Egypt has strengthened its alliances with neighboring countries, notably Somalia and Eritrea.

Egypt has even offered to deploy peacekeeping troops to Somalia as the African Union’s long-standing mission in the country nears its conclusion.

This move is seen as an attempt to bolster regional alliances and counterbalance Ethiopia’s growing influence in the Horn of Africa.

However, it remains unclear whether Egyptian forces will be deployed to Somalia, particularly as Ethiopian forces have now been greenlit to operate in regions such as Gedo, Hiiraan, Bay, and Bakool.

These areas were initially considered for deployment by Egyptian military forces under the AUSSOM framework, despite financial challenges facing the African Union.

Adding fuel to the fire, Egyptian officials are angry that they have provided weapons to Somalia and trained hundreds of Somali forces, all of which now seem to have been in vain as Mogadishu unexpectedly shifts towards Addis Ababa.

Ethiopia forces in Somalia. | PHOTO/File 2023/ ATMIS.

Eritrea, for its part, has expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the Tigray conflict, particularly as it did not achieve its goal of dismantling the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

Eritrean officials also remain angry over the Ethiopia-Somaliland port deal, which further inflamed tensions with Addis Ababa.

In response, President Isaias Afwerki has shifted his position, joining the tripartite alliance with Egypt and Somalia in an effort to counterbalance Ethiopia’s influence in the region.

However, this alliance has now become tenuous, as Somalia’s growing relationship with Ethiopia risks undermining Eritrea’s regional interests.

Eritrea views any new agreements granting Ethiopia access to the Red Sea as an infringement on its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In response to these developments, Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Meskel remarked that the periodic consultations between Egypt and Eritrea on the Somalia-Ethiopia situation aim to cultivate common positions on vital matters of regional security and stability.

“Themes addressed in greater depth include: the quest for an expeditious and peaceful solution to the conflict in the Sudan; endeavours underway on nation-building in Somalia; as well as challenges of peace and security in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea Regions,” – Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Meskel

Looking ahead, Eritrea and Egypt may retaliate diplomatically, isolating Somalia from key regional alliances.

This could result in economic sanctions or a reduction in military support, particularly in counter-terrorism efforts.

Somalia, thus, may find itself navigating a delicate balance between the benefits of its newfound alliance with Ethiopia and the repercussions of distancing itself from its long-standing allies.

The worst-case scenario would see Egypt and Eritrea escalating tensions militarily, which could spark a new arms race in the Horn of Africa. Both countries might ramp up their military presence along the Red Sea and in Somalia, further destabilizing the region.

Somalia’s neutrality could be severely compromised as it becomes caught between two powerful blocs, each with competing interests in the region’s future.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Somalia has warned of potential action against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) following Somaliland President Abdirahman Irro’s high-profile invitation to the World Governments Summit in Dubai.

“Somaliland is a region within Somalia with grievances we seek to resolve through dialogue,” said Somalia’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, reaffirming Mogadishu’s stance that Somaliland remains part of Somalia.

Earlier this month, President Irro was given a prominent platform at the Dubai summit, where he called on the international community to recognize Somaliland as an independent state.

Initially, Somalia downplayed the visit, comparing it to trips made by leaders of its federal states.

However, Foreign Minister Fiqi has now made it clear that Mogadishu will not ignore what it sees as interference in its sovereignty.

“Somalia will not tolerate interference,” he said, adding that the government is taking steps to address its relations with the UAE.

He did not specify what measures Mogadishu intends to take.

Diplomatic Fallout Over Somaliland’s International Recognition Bid

Irro’s visit, his first foreign trip since taking office, has escalated diplomatic tensions between Mogadishu and Abu Dhabi.

His state-level reception in the UAE has been seen as an implicit challenge to Somalia’s territorial integrity.

During the summit, President Irro addressed representatives from over 30 governments, highlighting Somaliland’s strategic location and governance as key reasons for international recognition.

He also spoke alongside Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman and CEO of DP World, which holds a 51% stake in Somaliland’s Port of Berbera—a key infrastructure project strengthening UAE-Somaliland ties.

In his speech, Irro also referenced the potential for U.S. recognition, stating:

Somaliland President @Abdirahmanirro leveraged his platform at the World Governments Summit in Dubai on Tuesday to advocate for Somaliland’s international recognition. pic.twitter.com/yoVZgZY5t1

— Kaab TV (@KaabTV) February 12, 2025

“We have strong relations with the United States, the United Kingdom, and other countries. Given our democratic governance, we hope the international community will acknowledge Somaliland’s sovereignty.”

“We hope that the United States may be the first country to recognize Somaliland,” he added, alluding to the anticipated foreign policy stance of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.

Relations between the UAE and Somalia’s federal government have been at their lowest point in recent years, with Abu Dhabi strengthening direct engagements with Somaliland and Puntland—two regions that have distanced themselves from Mogadishu’s central authority.

While Mogadishu has yet to outline specific countermeasures, its warning signals a deepening diplomatic rift over Somaliland’s growing international outreach.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – After the collapse of the Somali central government, the National Theatre, located at the heart of Mogadishu, fell into neglect for decades. However, Friday night marked a transformative moment—a night unlike any seen in the past 30 years.

Over two thousand young Somalis gathered at the Mogadishu National Theatre for a film screening, an event that signaled both hope and a return to cultural expression.

The film, Shabakadda (literally meaning “The Network”), was not just a cinematic production made in a country ravaged by civil war, terrorism, and the rise of criminal networks—as its storyline portrays—but also a testament to the resilience and bravery of its creators.

The actors, many of them young women, presented a narrative that tells a different and inspiring side of Somalia.

Produced by a local producers known as Masrax Production, the drama series carried a powerful message, addressing critical issues such as abuse of power, corruption, tax theft, abuses in local hospitals, and the exploitation of children through organ trafficking.

One particularly chilling line from the film encapsulated the severity of the problem: “One kidney costs US$ 80,000, and two will cost US$ 160,000. Don’t worry about the money. It is important that this work is done,” uttered by a character to depict the underground networks involved in kidnapping individuals for their organs in Mogadishu.

A problem few dare to speak about

Despite the widespread nature of the problem, few dare to speak about it openly.

“When we witnessed numerous incidents, such as missing children—some being reported in the media, others found deceased, and some discovered with missing body parts—we decided to create a story about it,” said Mohamed Hassan Ashraf, one of the film’s co-producers.

For Ashraf and his team of producers, the subject matter was harrowing and frightening, yet the local youth who attended the screening on Friday saw it as an opportunity for awareness-raising.

“Myself and thousands of youth gathered here to watch the film at the National Theatre. We have seen the first episode, and it was beautiful. In the beginning, the film started off normally, but by the end, it became much more interesting,” said Idiris Alteeso, a Mogadishu-based social media influencer.

For others, like Mohamed Ali, the film’s significance extended beyond the narrative itself.

“It was exciting. It shows how Somalia is making progress in the filmmaking industry,” he said, highlighting the evolving talents of local Somali filmmakers.

The revival

Poetry, songs, and concerts have long played a significant role in Somali history, serving as vital tools for communication, cultural expression, and national identity.

Public concerts, especially those held at iconic venues like the Somali National Theatre, historically brought people together during the 1970s and 1980s, celebrating Somali heritage and fostering a sense of belonging—a nostalgia cherished by many elderly Somalis today.

Events at the National Theatre have often blended traditional and modern art forms—even within Somalia’s conservative society—bridging generations and raising awareness about social causes.

However, during the civil war, many artists and actors fled the country in search of safety and opportunities elsewhere.

This mass exodus disrupted the once-vibrant arts scene, particularly at venues like the National Theatre, which had been a hub for music, theater, and cultural performances. As a result, Somalia’s rich cultural heritage suffered, leaving young people without access to the traditional art forms that shaped previous generations.

“I have seen amazing scenes here that I was not expecting. I had only heard about the theatre before, but tonight it’s a unique and exciting experience,” said Hafsa Hilkas, a young TikToker born after the Somali Civil War.

Yet, Friday night’s event signaled a revival.

A significant portion of the film’s cast, including those playing pivotal roles, were women.

For Anfa Aden Abdi and Maryama Abdiaziz, two of the female actors in the film, this was a long-time dream come true.

“I played a major role in the first episode, and people watched it with interest. I hope the audience will be able to see all 26 episodes of the series,” Anfa told Kaab TV shortly after the screening ended. “Being a woman actor was my dream, and I wanted to test it. I am confident now. I want to encourage other women who aspire to become film actors that they can do it too.”

Over two thousand young Somalis gathered at the Mogadishu National Theatre for a film screening| PHOTO/ Kaab TV.

“Tonight, something extraordinary happened here. I am thrilled that Masrax Production made our dream come true,” said Maryama. “I am happy to have played the role of the woman involved in human organ trafficking in the film to shed light on this huge problem affecting our communities.”

The night was not only a celebration of Somali talent but also a powerful reminder of the potential of storytelling to drive awareness and spark dialogue about pressing social issues.

With films like Shabakadda, Somalia’s creative minds are paving the way for a brighter future in the arts, while reclaiming their cultural identity and rewriting the narrative often associated with their country.

MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – Somali youth have launched an online campaign to raise awareness against clan conflicts amid ongoing deadly clashes between rival factions across the southern, central, and northern regions of the country.

In the Mudug region of central Somalia, clashes involving clan militias have resulted in civilian casualties and the displacement of hundreds of locals.

Similarly, in Hiiraan, gunmen ambushed and killed six Somali soldiers traveling through El Baraf town last month due to clan conflicts.

Meanwhile, in Galgadud, central Somalia, and Sanaag regions, clan militias continue to engage in deadly exchanges, escalating tensions with heavy weapons pouring into these areas.

Dr. Abdirahim Awiye, a university student currently based in Kampala, Uganda, along with his colleagues, initiated an online campaign named ‘Stop the Clan Fighting’.

The campaign, primarily active on Facebook and TikTok—popular platforms among Somali youth—aims to address the alarming levels of bloodshed in their country.

Speaking to Kaab TV, Dr. Awiye emphasized, “Those killed and displaced are our brothers and sisters, which is why we started this campaign.”

Reflecting on historical parallels, he drew inspiration from the Somali Youth League (SYL), a group that played a crucial role in Somalia’s independence struggle over six decades ago.

Dr. Awiye and his peers are determined to harness a similar spirit of unity to end the divisive clan-based conflicts that have plagued Somalia.

“I urge every Somali man and woman to use their social media platforms to promote peace and unity among their followers and influence their friends,” he urged.

Ahmed Muse, another local actively engaged in spreading awareness, blends traditional music with messages of brotherhood and coexistence in his videos.
