Galkayo (KAAB TV) – Tensions are high in Galkayo, the capital of Mudug region, following a clash last night between militias from two clans fighting in the town which reports say was related to recent clashes in the west of Mudug region.
The gunfight, which occurred in the Garsoor neighborhood on Saturday night, reportedly resulted in casualties, including both deaths and injuries.
Security forces from both administrations intervened and managed to put immediate ceasefire between the two militias.
The Habargedir/Sa’ad and Leelkase militia have been fighting in the rural villages in the west of Mudug, but it seems the clan conflict now spread to the Galkayo city.
Efforts are currently underway to prevent the unrest in western Mudug from spilling over into Galkacyo.
To prevent further conflict, clan elders from the Mudug region of Puntland have issued a peace appeal regarding the clashes between the Leelkase and Habargedir/Sa’ad clans in western Mudug.
The elders called on the warring clans to resolve their differences through dialogue, compromise, and reconciliation.
They expressed full support for the efforts of community leaders and elders from both sides working to restore peace.
The elders also urged unconditional acceptance of any peaceful resolutions reached during a recent meeting by Puntland and Galmudug ministerial delegation in Galkayo.
Additionally, they praised the efforts made by the Puntland and Galmudug administrations in curbing both past and ongoing conflicts.
The elders encouraged both administrations to take further responsibility in strengthening peace initiatives.
