Mogadishu (KAAB TV) – The chairman of the disputed Elections Committee, Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan, said that the schedule of the national elections will be announced within a week.
Abdikarin, together with members of the Committee, made this statement at a press conference held at the Committee’s headquarters in Mogadishu today Thursday.
Abdikarin, who spoke to the media, said that the election committee will visit the places planned for the conduct of the election by person and vote.
“We are announcing to the Somali people that this committee is ready to deliver the Election Fund to you, wherever you are,” said the Chairman.
The chairman said that the committee has given priority to the registration of political organizations and the new ones will be required to pay registration fees, voter awareness and technology to facilitate the election process.
Although the majority of the country is still controlled by the Al-Shabaab group, and the administrations of Puntland and Jubaland have rejected these elections, it is not clear how the elections can be held as the chairman of this committee said today.
It is also clear that the process of appointing this committee was not agreed upon, and the appointment of this committee came after the amendment of the constitution and the implementation of the new election law, which was also not completed.
Voter registrationThere are still no registered voters, which further complicates the prospect of holding direct elections in the country soon.
Previously, the political parties issued calls saying that this election committee is not “legal”, and that it is not acceptable to say that a committee appointed by President Hassan Sheikh alone is unacceptable.
Kaab TV found out that members of the international community, who support Somalia’s governance process, are still hesitant to support or work with this committe
