Rift Deepens Between North Eastern Leaders Firdhiye and Abwaan

A fresh political dispute has emerged between North Eastern State President Abdikadir Ahmed Aw Ali “Firdhiye” and his deputy, Abdirashid Yusuf Jibril “Abwaan,” who have been in office for about one year and two months.

The disagreement between the two senior officials is reportedly a recurring issue and is linked to differences over the administration’s governance, the constitutional powers of the president and deputy president, and the lack of consultation between the two leaders.

President Firdhiye returned a day ago from Mogadishu, where he had spent several months. A reception was held for him in Las Anod following his return, but his deputy, Abwaan, did not attend the welcoming ceremony.

Members of the North Eastern State parliament have reportedly divided into opposing camps, with lawmakers aligning themselves with either Firdhiye or Abwaan.

Lawmakers supporting the president are also reportedly pursuing a move to strip Abwaan of his parliamentary immunity.

The political dispute has contributed to repeated delays in parliamentary sessions, with several scheduled sittings reportedly postponed as lawmakers remain divided over the leadership dispute.

The latest developments have raised concerns about growing political tensions within the administration and their potential impact on the functioning of the newly established North Eastern State government.
