The Galmudug Police Command says its forces repelled an attack by armed clan-based militia fighters on a security checkpoint in Jiiro-Caweer, an area under Godinlabe district in Somalia’s Galgaduud region.
According to a statement issued by the police, the attack occurred at around 11:10 p.m. on September 14, 2026, while officers were stationed at the checkpoint carrying out security duties, including monitoring the movement of people and vehicles.
The police said the officers successfully defended the position before launching a follow-up security operation in and around the area to restore stability and prevent further violence.
The Jiiro-Caweer checkpoint is one of several security posts used to maintain order and monitor traffic in the region.
Galmudug Police stated that the armed group launched the assault during the night, but provided no details on the number of attackers, the weapons used, or the duration of the clash.
The statement also did not disclose whether there were any casualties among security forces or the attackers.
Following the attack, security forces conducted operations in the surrounding area and reportedly arrested several individuals accused of taking part in the assault.
Police said the suspects will be handed over to the relevant judicial authorities and are expected to face legal proceedings.
Authorities added that the security situation in Jiiro-Caweer is now calm, with police maintaining a presence in key locations to prevent renewed violence.
Galmudug Police Commissioner Colonel Khalif Abdulle Maalin warned armed groups against activities that threaten security and stability, saying firm action would be taken against those responsible for such attacks.
He stressed that any measures taken by security forces would be carried out in accordance with the law.
The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in parts of rural Galgaduud, where local disputes, clan tensions, and armed confrontations occasionally undermine stability.
While authorities say the immediate situation has been brought under control, questions remain over the motive behind the attack and whether underlying tensions could trigger further unrest.
Local observers note that long-term stability will require not only security operations but also efforts to address the root causes of recurring conflicts and strengthen cooperation between communities and security institutions.
