The Federal Government of Somalia has expressed its deepest condolences to Ethiopia following a deadly landslide that struck the Tsadqane Debre Mitmaq St. Mary Monastery in North Shewa, Ethiopia’s Amhara region, after torrential overnight rainfall.
The disaster, which occurred on Monday, August 4, killed at least 14 worshippers who had gathered at the monastery for an overnight prayer vigil and holy water cleansing ceremony, while several others were injured.
Emergency teams have continued search and rescue operations as authorities assess the full extent of the tragedy.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Somalia conveyed its heartfelt sympathies to the Ethiopian government, leadership, and people, reaffirming its solidarity during the difficult period.
Mogadishu offered condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, wished the injured a swift and full recovery, and commended the efforts of emergency responders working at the disaster site.
The message reflects the longstanding ties between the neighboring countries, which continue to cooperate on regional security, trade, humanitarian issues, and broader efforts to promote stability in the Horn of Africa.
