Somaliland MP Arrested in Addis Ababa

Security authorities in Ethiopia have arrested Suleiman Nur Warsame, popularly known as Suleiman Food, a member of Somaliland’s House of Representatives, in the capital, Addis Ababa.

The reason for the lawmaker’s arrest has not yet been officially disclosed by Ethiopian authorities, and details surrounding the circumstances of his detention remain unclear.

Suleiman Food is regarded as one of the prominent lawmakers who actively supported the election campaign of Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro). His detention has therefore attracted significant public attention both within Somaliland and among the Somali diaspora.

Family members have confirmed that the MP remains in custody in Addis Ababa but said they have not been informed of the reasons behind his arrest or whether any formal charges have been filed against him.

The incident has generated widespread discussion on social media, with many calling for clarification from both the Ethiopian government and Somaliland authorities.

As of now, neither the Somaliland government nor the office of President Cirro has issued an official statement regarding the detention. Ethiopian authorities have also yet to comment publicly on the case.

The arrest comes at a time when relations between Ethiopia and Somaliland have remained under close regional scrutiny following recent diplomatic engagements and ongoing cooperation between the two sides. Observers say further clarification from Ethiopian authorities will be necessary to establish the facts surrounding the lawmaker’s detention.
