Al-Shabaab militants storm a military base in Afmadow

|

Mogadishu (Kaab TV) – Reports from Lower Jubba region of Jubbaland state that early on Saturday morning, members of the Al-Shabaab militant group launched a double suicide bombing attack on a Somali army military base in Afmadow town, Lower Jubba region.

According to security sources in the region, the militants used two vehicles filled with explosives to target the heavily guarded militant camp before storming it.  A fierce gun battle has been reported afterwards.

The reports from the area say that the situation is still complicated, and at the same time there is a loss of lives and injury as a result of the attack.

Al-Shabaab has announced that it has targeted the military base where Somali national army and Jubbaland security forces were stationed saying that it has inflicted damage to the soldiers and officers there, despite not giving out any figures.

Also, in Afmadow are the Minister of Security of Jubbaland and the Commander of the 43rd Division of the Armed Forces, who are organizing against Al-Shabaab there. The Afmadow camp is one of the most key military bases in the region.

The Al-Shabaab attack appears to be preventing the military offensive by the federal and Jubbaland forces in the Jubba valley.
