MOGADISHU (Kaab TV) – The Somali Future Council has announced that it has approved a Transitional Direct Elections Model aimed at addressing ongoing political instability and facilitating inclusive, consensual, and credible elections in Somalia.
In a statement, the Council said the decision is based on political compromise and reflects the aspiration of the Somali people to resolve the current electoral dispute in a timely manner.
According to the Council, the proposed system upholds the constitutional principle of citizens’ right to freely and directly elect their representatives, while also maintaining the existing 4.5 clan-based power-sharing arrangement.
The Council also called for an end to what it described as “one-sided elections with predetermined outcomes” conducted by the outgoing administration, urging instead a negotiated transition toward a direct electoral process that ensures public participation and political legitimacy.
It added that further details, guiding principles, and implementation procedures will be presented once formal political negotiations begin to resolve the electoral impasse and manage the country’s political transition.
The statement comes as Somalia remains in a political stalemate over the transition to elections. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s term has ended, while the term of the federal parliament also expired in mid-April, deepening uncertainty over the country’s electoral timeline and governance framework.
